    Tax Exemption 1973 cars

Just got the hot poop from DVLA. As my Stag LD23485 was first registered on 25.06.73 I am chuffed.

As the taxation class is not already shown as Historic Vehicle on the V5C for your vehicle you must apply by post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DZ. The V5C must show a date of manufacture prior to the 01.01.1974. If this is not recorded on the V5C but the vehicle was manufactured prior to this date you will need to produce dating evidence.

Acceptable dating evidence can be obtained from:

    • An extract from the manufacturer/factory record - these will have the chassis number of the vehicle against the month and year of production*
    • An extract from the 'Glasses guide'- which is a comprehensive guide on production dates and includes chassis numbers
    • If the vehicle has been imported and already registered, the original foreign registration certificate.

*A certified copy of the factory record (with the embedded stamp) will be acceptable only from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (BMIHT)

The keeper will need to write ‘Historic’ in the change to taxation class field in section 7 of the V5C and sign section 8.

If the application is successful, you will receive your tax disc within 2 weeks.

An updated V5C will be returned within 4 weeks. If a V62 form is submitted a V5C will be returned within 6 weeks.

*Please note that you are required to submit an MOT test certificate with your application.

More information on the historic vehicles taxation class can be found on information leaflet INF34 Taxing Historic Vehicles.

Form V62 can be downloaded from https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registrat...e-v5c-log-book or obtained from any tax disc issuing Post Office®.

Form V10 can be downloaded from https://www.gov.uk/car-tax-disc-vehi...using-form-v10 or obtained from any tax disc issuing Post Office®.

    Great info, thanks.

Can anyone enlighten me as to which is the newer version of the V5C. I have 2 at present in the cars history file as I like to keep everything related.

One is blue/green and one and a pinky/red one

    Ian.

I've just received the pinky red one last week so that is the most up to date version.
It doesn't show date of manufacture but the date of first registration is 17/10/1973.
Do I apply for a change in taxation class now or leave it until I retax the car (2 months prior to the tax exemption point)? That would be my inclination.
I thought it all happened automatically but maybe that's a bit naive.

                Hmm.

My car would have about 5 months of paid for VED remaining as of April 1st. Will I get a refund?

                  Cheers Andy,

I think you have to wait until the changes are in place. My build date is 31/8/73 but date of reg is 1/1/74 in the V5C so I imagine I'll have prove the build date with my Heritage certificate but annoyingly I paid the extra when I ordered it for the headed paper copy to send to Swansea which they don't emboss

You should do Wilf. I had a 1968 Series 2a Land Rover when the original Historic Vehicle class started and I received a refund of duty already paid.

I'll effectively have 4 months of paid for VED too. My brother in law says it happened automatically at the last change and he got the full refund without having to ask. Judging by Swansea's current state of affairs, I wouldn't bank on it!

                        Ian,

The red V5C is the current and most up-to-date document for any British registered vehicle legally on UK roads. The DVLA issued red V5Cs to every registered keeper about 2 years ago to replace the blue / green ones after a batch of them were stolen.

                            Mark,

That's right, but there were one or two other differences.

Whilst the V5 has always carried a warning about the document showing only the registered keeper (who may not be the legal owner), the latest red version also tells you not to buy a car without a V5.

For me, that new inclusion raises two questions:

                            1. If there's no V5, how would you read the passage advising you not to buy a car without one?

                            2. If the V5 does not certify LEGAL ownership, but only lists the KEEPER, what use is it in protecting a buyer from fraud?

From bitter experience, please don't anyone rely soley on the presence of a V5 to imply or prove ownership. After losing £19k on a Merc that had a V5 in the 'owners' name, and even after HPi checks gave it the all clear, I still later found the car had been sold and then leased back. I lost the car AND the money.

I've never bought another Merc. Only went for it as it was an SL convertible anyway, but now I have a better model!

                            Regards

                            Steve

Further to my DVLA definitive answer, as the change does not take effect until 1 April 2014, and I quote "Please submit your application as close to this date as possible, to ensure that the change in legislation has taken place before your documents are processed."
