    Play in front wheels

I wasnt happy with the car on a run out last week, so I had it up on the jack tonight checking to see if anything moved orcreaked plus a visual check of everything.

Apart from solving the mystery of why the diff has got a bit nosier than normal - just under half a litre of oil has leaked out since last autumn (1500 miles max) and tightening up a couple of front wheel bearings, I am not happy with a bit of movement at 9 oclock and 3 oclock on both front wheels. Not a lot of movement but my preference is for none!

I dont see how it can be the hub - fine at 12 and 6, so it points to the connecting joints on the steering rack. However thatis less than 3000 miles old so either I need to have a little chat with the supplier or its something else (Advise please!) or nothing to worry about (hopefully).

    All suggestions appreciated

    Thanks Graham

    Hi Graham

Check the suspension top mounting bushes for wear these go eventually, get the ones from Chris Witor the miles better than the standard one.

Other than than control arm bush or ball joint, track rod end or drag strut bushes?

I had an "informational" on my last MOT about play in the steering rack... which was new (recon) less than 1000 miles ago, though I haven't noticed any play... where did you get the rack? Mine was from Paddocks.

No - thought about it, and decided that I really fancy a Vitesse as I've never had one, and had 6 Sprints alreadyso should really be over them by now... things may change, but the one locally is a bit of a basket case!

Got a pukka Workshop Manual that he can have, and I'm sure he'll want to talk Sprint for a bit.....he seemed to have questions at Brands.....

                  Russ.

There is a "Vitesse convertible" that comes up on e-bay.

Might need a little of your mechanical magic.

                  John.

Last time it was on, I bidded it up to 9p. Bit worried in case I won it. A gallon of unleaded is around £5.40, but I suppose it is worth it to put him out of our misery.

I was actually thinking of the car, but maybe you are right.... the petrol would be far better used on him.......

it would be a mercy thing.....

I changed the sleeves in the strut bushes last yearand the bushes, drag arms and other bits were all overhauled/changed a few weeks before the steering rack.

By co-incidence, my mate withthe MGC at brands called in and he didnt think it was badso I have bitten the bullet and booked an MOT this afternoon. Its due soon anyway, so I will get the pass (or not)out of the way.

I have also booked it in for a diff overhaul and a look at the clutch for Thursday but that will be put on hold if it fails the MOT!

                          to be continued...

Well it passed - I flagged the movement but the tester thought thatit was fine for an older car. As for me, I used to be paranoid, but now I am not sure

Also, that is my 5th MOT test and once again nothing has been poked-up the exhaust, so still ignorant about how many ppms etc I have going on and long may it continue!!!
