May be mistaken but I thought when I looked into taking my daily to southern France last year, I found the train no longer runs through France, (at least from northern France). I think there are ones running from The Netherlands and Germany, but not France.

There is a car train running from Düsseldorf to Alessandria in the northwest of Italy.

                  Hello Baz,

I reckon a must in Italy is Lago di Garda. There my wife and I usually stay in Hotel "Vigna" (http://www.lago-di-garda.org/hotel-s...o-gardasee.asp). there you can leave your car in a nearby covered car park and you live directly but on the promenade. Salo has a lot of Italian flair, not too many tourists and Milano, Verona, Venice are not too far away.

                  Good luck with your choice,
                  Dieter - from Germany.

Tuscany in general and Florence in particular. You do not say when you are going but Padova during the classic car market / show is a must if your trip coincides with the show.

Lucca is a nice town and, for my money, Sienna beats Florence hands down.

Agree Lucca is great as are small towns such as Pietrasanta slightly to the north. Pisa is ok for a quick look but wouldn't stay there.

We did south of France and up to Turin in the summer, take plenty of water, for you not the stag. the temps were into the 30s at the end of July. We found the fuel prices more expensive in Italy too.

we avoided Paris like the plague! We stayed in Lillle then Valence, just south of Lyon.

All I can suggest is just take your time and enjoy the scenery around the Alps. Mont Blanc tunnel was a rip off at 45 euros one way!
