I had something very similar happen on my V8 Toledo many years ago while accelerating out of a corner at low speed. It appears that the little bevel gears in the diff were incorrectly shimmed so all the load was taken by just one of the pair.
The gear shattered, got caught between the axle housing and the crownwheel, and was expelled through the top of the casing! Fortunately this unlocked the rear axle before I went backwards into my neighbours hedge, and I was able to drive home on the remaining gear!

To me stagmuffins way of doing this mod looks less likely to have any heat distortion effect on the bearing carrier than the buttress type additions that seem to be more common. I will do mine that way I think.

Think that depends who's welded it, and how, had mine done by a pro, and left the old bearing in, he said that it would be fine, the ones from ld parts are also welded in the same manner as mine, but you pays your money and takes your choice, don't think there's a problem with either method, but that only my opinion.
