    Royal Blue versus Sapphire Blue

    Hey Folks,

I've just bought a 1971 Mark 1 Stag (yay!). It was described as Sapphire Blue but the well-known paint code sources indicate that SB was not available in '71. Royal Blue, however, was available.

Attached is a link to a photo of the front left wheel arch close up. http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/Tr...4f36b.jpg.html.

Can anybody more experienced than me please identify the actual colour? I am waiting for a BMIHT certificate that will confirm the original paint code.

I am planning an exterior respray that will use colour paint generated from a machine match from unfaded, untouched paint in the engine bay. I am not planning a full body interior/exterior respray with the engine out (if I was we would just put it into RB).

    Many thanks

Hi Trig and welcome to the Club,

From the photo it's hard to tell the exact shade of blue on your car but if you look in the left hand side door ('B') post you will see a plate which contains the codes for the paint and interior trim colours. Sapphire Blue is code 96 but I don't know the code for Royal Blue (although you should find it on Rimmers website). No doubt someone will be along shortly with a fuller answer.

    Regards,

    Mark

PS - either way Blue IS the colour

Hi Trig and welcome. As Mark says it is difficult to tell but yours does look slightly darker than mine Paul's Camera 131.jpg which is Sapphire.

      Nice looking car though.

      Cheers

        Hi, and welcome.

Royal Blue is paint code 56. If you go to http://www.stagbytriumph.co.uk/ and select 'Colours and Trim' you can then click on the individual colours to see a Stag painted in that colour. The difference between Royal and Sapphire isn't immediately apparent in these pictures though I'm afraid.

Hi Trig (is that your real name ?),

Is there any chance that your car has been resprayed ? Mine has, although it's not immediately obvious, and it appears to be a shade that is in between British Racing Green and Brooklands.

As Triumph had disappeared as a manufacturer, it is hard to find definitive evidence of certain things. However a good paint supplier will be able to match your colour - whatever it is

Welcome to Stag ownership and the Forum, by the way

          Cheers

          Julian

Lot's of pictures of mine which is Sapphire in my albums you can look at, the colour can look so different in different lights as you will see in the photos but I would say Sapphire as I know and have seen another members (John " Cosmic wheels" ) car which is Royal Blue and it's much darker.

            Welcome BTW,

            Ian.

              hi
not really related to your enquiry but I am having a similar dilemma about Royal blue and Sapphire blue, both great colours but quite different, I am restoring a TR6 and cant make my mind up which blue to use. It is quite difficult to look at pictures of colours as different light drastically affects the shade of blue , I think the only way for me to decide is to actually see both colours in front of my eyes , cant wait for spring time to get to a car show and hopefully see both colours at once ! Very big decision !
hope you manage to sort your problem !

                Hi
I suspect that it is probably a respray, mine is supposed to be Royal Blue (was Red), but when I had the paint analysed was a Diahatsu blue from the 1980's!
Enjoy it and welcome to Stag ownership. Nigel

                    Hello,

When I had some damage done to my royal-blue TR6 I turned up at the garage and said that I need a respray in royal-blue. The owner of the garage only laughed and then showed me ten different (!) colour code cards - all saying royal-blue and then he asked which one I would like to have....

The only way to find out the real colour code is to go to a specialist, have the paint scanned and analyzed by a computer. Then the computer tells you what colour code comes closest to your colour.

In my case it was: royal blue Code No. 56; PPG 13126, ICI No. 4665 - identical with Porsche POR 3C7 or Volkswagen Y5K.

                    Good luck with your research,
                    Dieter.

Firstly, a very happy new year everyone!

Many thanks for all of your responses - good to see such a nice warm welcome from the commnity as well as a wealth of information coming from members - a good sign of a good forum (I am on the TR Register forum too - another great forum).

I am waiting for the certificate to confirm original colour (B post may have been changed) and the computer analysis. Let's hope it is not Daihatsu! Let's see! I will keep you posted.

                      Best,

                      Gavin
