    biting the bullet

I am finally getting the diff sorted tommorow and due to a recent bout of clutch judder, getting the noisy gerarbox, clutch andrelease bearing sorted at the same time.

Hardy's are doing the workandIam preparing the wallet foropen artery assualt when I collect the car this time next week.

I still havent decided on the 3.45 or 3.7 replacement and would appreciate any advice on strengthening the nose of the diff that I have heard about - is this worth it?

I have got the 3.45 and haven't found any more mpg but less revs obviously .All in all i wouldn't go for it if i was getting another one .I only got this as a stop gap as it was the only one available at the time mine went "pop".Nothing wrong with it but i like a bit more acceleration.looking forward to my 3.64 BMW and reduced diametertyresthis winter

Graham, instead of having your diff sorted, why not pop down to WINS international and buy a recon unit of the shelf and with a guarantee - I did the same thing last year with my drive shafts. It's just not cost effective getting things 'sorted'. would only take you about two / three hours work to change the diff yourself - just think of the labour savings.
I have no connection with WINS but have found that he parts unlike a certain other supplier all fit.

I fitted a 3.45:1 diff to my previous Man o/d Stag. Brought the revs down a bit at the expense of a touch of acceleration.

I was planning to do the same with my current Auto, but whilst underneath yesterday fitting Datsun driveshaft conversion I noticed that the diff has an MG prefix, so someone has already beaten me to it. That explains why the speedo reads 70 and TomTom says 75!

Hi Ian, the diff rebuild is £400 plus the dreaded VAT. I dont think that is too bad. I have a cap on the Gearbox depending what needs doing and the labour for each is the same as Nick paid for his clutch.

I can be practical but somethings have a habit of going wrong on meand taking many times longer than they should do..I looked at the diff unit during the week and thought it "dooable" but I have two free clear days between now and the 2nd week of September, some of its work some of its fun but I made the mistake of trying to do what I havent done before with the TR6 and I just cant be bothered to do that again. I drop it off today. Go away for a nice long weekend, back on Tuesday, working in Windsor and staying over night Wednesday, picking up the car, if all goes to plan on Thursday morning. I will flinch as I key the pin number but no grief, no hassle, any problems are sorted and Mrs B is happy.

Would appreciate some views on strengthening the nose of the diff

              Dave,

would this diff be from a MGBV8, because apart from maybe an old MGC diff i can't think of anything strong enough.

Graham, the line if Mrs B is happy is all you need to say all others matters are mere incidentals.

Talking to Kevin who did the timing chain rebuild at ND, he said he would only fit customer supplied diffs as he'd had so many problems with noisy unitsfrom suppliers that he was having to change out FOC. I reckon if you have a rebuild with good guarantee then thats the way togo, as they'll take more care.Alternatively, DIY- its not difficult, yes you need dial gauge and ingenuity but I've done mine and I know someone else who is happy with theirs.

I overhauled my rear end last winter, as I had a leaky diff, hence needed a new quill shaft bearing. I do not now have any means of slackening off nuts tightened to 120ft lbs, on my back under the car, or heavy duty welding kit, so bought an exchange reinforced front mount from SOC spares. I have heard of breakages in the mag. so thought it was worth it for peace of mind. This could be done easily and cheaply with a good welder or blacksmith.

The photo shows 2 of the 4 reinforcing fillets, each spaced midway between the mounting holes. It certainly looks a lot stronger than the original.

                      Ian,

Neither. Stag diffs have the LD prefix to the number. MG prefix refers to one of the 'big' Triumphs, possibly the 2.5 estate.
