    Manual

    Hi,

I drove a manual stag today and the gears seem be slow and snatch into the gears. It just didn't feel right. Is a manual gearbox expensive to replace?

Any views of price and price of fitting would be welcome. I would need to factor this into the budget.

    Cheers.

Sounds more like a dragging clutch to me. Knackered gearboxes tend to either whine if the bearings are shot, or crunch as they go into gear if the synchromesh is worn.

It may be something as simple as the clutch needing to be bled properly (lots posted on here about it).

No idea of the costs involved as I always do everything myself, prices of ready reconditioned gearboxes are easy enough to find.

When I first drove my car as a manual a few months ago I hadn't driven a manual Stag in 30 years. I did feel that (compared to modern cars) the gearstick had a long throw and the gears were were widely spaced (lots of sideways movement of the gearstick required) even compared to my MGB. Other than that the gearbox performed just like a modern car. If there was no crunching or popping out of gear on the overrun, as Neil says, could be the clutch.
