drive shafts ahh that one again

I'm at the workshop greasing my shafts .After doing a little research I'm using the correct grease .What worries me is the hydraulic effect I'm getting when the shaft goes in and out. It seems to me a air escape would help these shafts move in and out more freely . Is this something anyone has thought about.
Fitting a grease nipple seems to only give more hydraulic resistance by filling the cavity with grease . Am I applying to much grease .I'm only coating the surfaces but its acting like a air tight seal. Any help would be great

The excess usually just gets pushed out at the spline end, they only need a smear of a Moly based grease CV joint grease is ideal.

Hi Ian , yes using the moly grease and boy is it good. Its almost too good creating a seal . I will try pumping it. It still begs the question of air entrapment in the female end. Trouble is the grease would cetrifugal its way out then and block any hole. I will call my mate Percy Vere

        Hi Edd,

The inner end of the female section is sealed by a core plug. Some of these have a hole in the centre that would allow air to escape. It is a while since I've had to do this job (Datsun shafts fitted ) but I don't recall having the same degree of hydraulic resistance that you describe. I have a spare set of shafts in the garage, but would have to get the a Stag out to check them, and it's p***ing down again so the car is staying put......

Cheers Dave I think that's where i'm going to locate the hole .I didn't know it was a core plug so that's really helped.

Job done. I think this is a important mod . I drilled a 1/8 hole in the core plug and instantly you can hear the air inhaling /exhaling
I'm glad I looked into this now.
            Thanks to Sam staginhidding too.

Hi steve I personally don't think so its only a tiny hole. The design is flawed with no air escape and any tyoe of valve woukd jyst get blocked with grease. The current design acts like a bellows thus any quick movement ie sudden cornering that air needs to shift fast. After I drilled the hole the resustance is purley the grease and nor air pressure.
This senario will contribute to give the Stag twitch.

Thanks Sam and glad it's worked for you Edd.

I agree it's an important mod although some shafts I've seen have it and some don't.

I've said it before but I really wonder if it's a significant contributory factor to the Stag twitch.

The hole can be really small - I think mine were only about 1/16" - air doesn't need much to escape through.

Btw Sam - I've just found my drive shaft 'core plug' (to others, it went flying across my shed when I was trying to repeen it into place )

                    Cheers

                    Julian

ps i managed to drill the core plug in situ ie without taking the circlips and uj apart , i broke several drills but it soon went through .

Well great minds think alike. I thought of the idea ie the hole but was worried where to put it , then Sam confirmed you guys had done the same thing .I was still a tad confussed where to stick it then ian pointed out its a core plug at the end where i thought it was part of the casting. Its funy how you thought the same when it came to pushing on the splines only to have a massive air cushion. Its not a new idea i,m sure but its nice to give it some air so to speak
It's great to get some help as your working in the workshop , thanks again guys .
                      Edd

I,m glad this idea has had some
