yes i have made two now, when i made mine my brother saw it and wanted one as well, there not that big as you have to cut out for the pedal box and steering column
but i think they finish the car off, i may still have the template i usedS5005103.jpgS5005104.jpg
I'm sorry to say that a 2000 shelf will NOT work . I thought it would and got one (kindly donated by Mike Stevens on here) and spent quite some time before finding out that it wouldn't work The trouble is that, if you look down on the front padded rail from above, the Stag's curves towards you, whilst the 2000 curves away and so fouls against the column.
The padded rails (for a LHD car) are available from the main suppliers and they look almost like the original. The only trouble with new ones is that they don't come with the chrome strip. On mine, I took a standard (RHD) chrome strip and cut it and then fitted the two parts the other way around and the steering column totally hides the join (although you can't see the chrome at all in this pic)
Dave's looks excellent - better than mine - however I have been able to get a fair bit more usable space. I made up the front rail, as described above, and then got the two end brackets from Les Clarke. IIRC the outer one will fit either side and the one against the centre console I had to modify slightly.
Then, for the main part of the shelf, I bought some 'Millboard' from Woolies trimming ( http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1648-millboard.aspx). Lots of trial and error cutting and fixing with small nuts and bolts and rivets to try to replicate the left hand one.
However, as Bruce (Rubce) will tell you, you can't get make it quite the size of shelf that I have if you have big feet . I've got small feet (no comments please ) and it's fine for me but when Bruce tried my car his toes touched the back of the shelf (I think he was just showing off )
I hope that makes some sort of garbled sense. I find the shelf really useful

I like the speaker arrangements - a good alternative than cutting out the door panels. As you made these yourself, on the passenger's side did you consider to do away with the space left for the air conditioning unit which would give you greater shelf space? Unless you have air conditioning.

the passengers one is the same size as original, apart from being a little higher, this was because i did want to fit 3'inch speakers as used by vw,but could not fine any soled with the grill, so had to go 4'inch
Thanks for the info Dave. I have my speakers in the door panels so if I ever consider renewing the door panels may go for your option. Can't think what size my speakers are but can see that you had to make the back panel a little higher for your 4" ones.
