    Square Headed Plugs

A little while back, some of us discussed the difficulty in finding square sockets to fit male square plug heads. Someone kindly shared the info. about where 8 point sockets (which fit squares) can be bought from the USA which was helpful and I bought a set, I think there were 5 sizes included.

To add to that, and perhaps give more range or less time in obtaining them, Machine Mart are now advertising a set of 12 point 3/8" deep sockets (called 'multi-fit') at around a tenner. These will fit square heads and are easy to get, just be aware that as they have12 grooves they have less 'purchase' than the 8 point items, so siezed square plugs might get the corners rounded off.

Still, as often happens with me, the need is to make up a long tap wrench, and if you have 8 or 12 point sockets they allow you to use you ratchets and extensions as tap wrenches, especially if you wind some tape around the socket and tap to stop it sliding out.

    Regards

I managed to remove the back axle plug without too much effort.

To get the gearbox plug out I had to get a bolt head welded on to it, as it had lost it's square end due to not using the correct tools (partly my fault).

Replaced the two plugs with new ones but I filed the squares down slightly so that they'd fit a new 10mm drain plug female socket (off eBay or Halfords) - dead easy.

Now, it's a breeze to remove and refit them.

Might work out cheaper than special tools ??!!??

    Best regards

The magnetic ones you can buy from the Stag part sellers have got a hex head. Use those and you can use a normal spanner/socket on them. How much/little metal the magnet picks up is also a useful tell tale of what is going on in your engine/gearbox.

Plenty of ways to remove square plugs and I guess many of us have had to resort to welding a nut on now and then, I know I have.

None of that will help you make a long tap wrench though...
