Cant see that there are any major problems with any of this. At least a car dealer can not bump up the price of a car because it has tax left on it.... might be an issue for ebay traders though. You want to see before you buy but you have to pay the VED before you can drive the car away. I guess you can do it all insurance and ved online using your mobile phone these days so it wouldn't be so bad.
Some less scrupulous dealers may complain!

Can see the reasoning behind it but it's a great scam from the tax man side, thy're bound to get a lot of additional tax from that wheeze.

Personally I would prefer to see it scrapped altogether and stuck on the price of fuel as the amount of VED (Road tax) on cars has got totally distorted. My wifes "little" MX5 now costs £260 per year based on emissions, she doesn't do a particularly high mileage in it but does need a car to get to work. We can't afford £15k on a new low tax car so are stuffed. And before anyone says not fair on people who live in rural areas etc. I live in a rural area and can't necessarily afford a nice new car in a lower tax band but feel putting the cost on fuel is fairer, the more miles you do and more uneconomical your car the more you pay. I have an old land rover (£225 per year) it only does about 1000 miles a year (in the snow or pulling a large trailer). My kids 106's cost £135 yet they do 50 mpg. A modern diesel car (fairly large) gets away with £20. How can that be fair. (and don't get me started on Hybrids such as the Prius). (and yes my Stag is tax exempt!). As a family we now pay over £1000 per year in road tax because we can't afford shiny new cars - in any case I think it is greener to run a car as long as possible if it is properly maintained. Our "newest" car is 12 years old - the oldest is 28 (Land Rover) (excluding the Stag), they all pass the MoT emmisons easily (including the Turbo Diesel Land Rover).

65% of the cost of every fill goes to the taxman already, do you really want to give them more?

If you put in £50 to fill, that's over £30 you just gave to the Chancellor.

Hear hear (said in best House of Commons voice); they won't do it though far too sensible a solution. Personally I think it'd be much fairer and it'd cut down on evasion. Plus it would save in administration costs, the French would have to pay it so that's a bonus and my Stag would finally be tax free.

As I said my household now pays over £1000 per year in VED, yet others with a similar no. of cars because they are new or newish would pay around £100 or a tenth of what we pay. So no I don't want to pay more, I want to pay my fair share! Stick it on fuel, the more you use the more you pay, fair and simple and difficult to avoid - so no chance of it happening!

If you change car half way through the month, you lose half a months rebate. There is a few quid to the exchequer.

I dream of a £50 fill My 80 litre tank takes over £100 every fortnight.

I'm one of those who lives in the country but theonly trouble is that I live (almost) on a mountain, whilst my wife (for whom I am unpaid taxi driver ) works nearly 1000 ft lower. The downhill trips don't balance out the twice daily trudge uphill unfortunately - with commensurate effect on fuel consumption

Lovely part of the country though

                    Cheers

Our tax system is to complicated for them to change to putting it on fuel . I agree it would be fairer those that use the roads pay . But how will we get on if tax exempt could we claim back tax I doubt it . Also Lorries pay 1000's road tax per year how much would need to be put on Diesel to cover the lost revenue if it went up by a huge amount it would more than cancel out using a diesel as it is cheaper to run.
We know they will not change it but think of another devious way to screw the motorist already have emissions tax insurance tax, Toll roads congestion charge . we are an easy target they would love to put up fuel but dare not. The lorry drivers cannot take much more they are really struggling to make ends meet.
They are not making a fortune but we need them if there was a national lorry strike the country would stop , no food or fuel everything bought any were is transported by lorry they are our soldiers to fight the government on tax rises . So be nice to lorry drivers the knights of the road .Going to work now will have a look this evening to see the flack and how many hornets nest I have upset. Derek

There would never be a national strike, it has been tried many times and always failed. Now the French, they really know how to blockade roads and stop traffic..

Do their cars break down a lot then?

A rough calculation based on 2011 tax revenues gives a figure of 17p per litre for the change to be tax neutral as far as the government is concerned. In 2011 private motorists paid around £4.9 billion in road tax and businesses around £1billion. Around 35billion litres of fuel was consumed. Sure there would be winners and losers, not even sure if I would be better off overall BUT I feel it would be a fairer system. The more you use the more you pay. If you have a car and hardly use it then you pay very little. Why should some older classic cars be tax exempt?? They are still cars, still use the road, still cause pollution and add to congestion, its nice not having to pay but if the tax was on fuel then the modest mileages most classic cars cover would not cost the owners much more. Derek I understand and mostly agree with your points about the haulage industry and I am sure if there was a political will the politicians could complicate the simple scheme by giving some tax reliefs to the haulage industry.

Did you know that bus companies get about 20p per litre back from HMRC. Haulage get , got it, nothing. So it's not a level playing field to start with.
