That is crazy. Captive nuts are readily available for a few pence. These are the ones Paddocks sell for the radiator top mounting bolts. Just remove the nuts and put bolts in their place. Job done
That's indeed exactly what I did when I restored my Escort as the captive cage was rusted through. The difficult bit was getting the square-headed bolts in the right size. They are like battery bolts but bigger.
The father of one of our rally chums is entering a Mk1 Escort in the Snowmans Rally next month, must be about £40K as it is, and that is for one that can enter the Historics section. If you upgrade with sequential boxes etc the prices jump.
