    Earth straps

Not posted for a while but lately I have had starting problems, when I take the car out for a run and the engine is up to temperature and I turn the engine off, sometimes when I try and start the car again there is nothing there no click no noise what so ever, but if I leave it for a while and come back it starts no problem.I am going to check starter motor and solenoid but I want to check earth straps but not being to mechanically minded i'm not sure where they are.Any help chaps would be much appreciated or anything else you might think I need to check would be good .Also is the starter and solenoid easy to check. I am really enjoying having ago at fixing things myself and because it is mine I can just take my time.
    Many thanks in advance Steve

Hi Steve if you suspect an earthing problem use a battery jump lead from earth on battery to engine
    hope that helps Martin

Hi Steve, if Martins suggestion doesn't work, check that other electrical items work eg lights and there is a reading on the volt meter. If these are ok, the problem may be the ignition switch or a faulty relay (behind parcel self). Andrew

Hi Steve , worth checking the large multi plug , looking at the engine on the right hand side at the bulkhead about four inches above the starter motor , these connections sometimes get dirty , just give them a clean , the starter and inhibitor circuit runs through this connecter !!best Reguards Graham

Another indication of poor earthing of the engine is the Choke cable getting warm when cranking the engine As already suggested a temporary earth using a jump lead will confirm it if it is an earth problem.

As there is a complete lack of click, it sounds to me more like a fault in either the feed to the solenoid, or the starter motor/solenoid itself. Put a tester on the solenoid (WR) terminal to see if its getting any juice.

Thanks very much guys that's quite a few other things I have learnt from this forum, I think it just goes to prove this forum has people on here with a wealth of information, still would like to know where earth straps are.
              All the best Steve

There should be one on the front of the engine and connected to the inner wing on the O/S.

The main ( 'cranking' ) one goes from the battery (NEG) to RH inner wing, then onto the engine block under a bolt near the PAS pump (position varies depending on who last worked on it!). There are other more minor ones all around the car.
