It's the thin end of the wedge. Once that is in place, it will surely be applied across the country. Hopefully Clarkson will soon 'deal with' the persons responsible.

Great. Spending billions to make trains go faster, then millions to make cars go slower.
And don't forget that the politician's ultimate goal of road charging also figures in this. You have to slow cars on the sliproads down to get the windscreen transducers to work as I understand it.
I haven't done a long journey by train for years - A visit to the NEC was the last time I did and never again!
Frankly the train could cover the ground at 300 mph but it will still be full of dirty, smelly, uncouth, iphone wielding people who have not the slighest consideration for anyone else plus it is more expensive than doing the trip even in a Stag.
Motorways should be unlimited in speed and anyone caught doing 70 or less in any lane other than the inside lane should be immediately removed, fined £1,000 and banned for from driving for life.
Lorries should only use the inside lane too - they dont need to be able to pass one another at their limited speed of 50.
I don't have the facts to hand but it was my understanding that at busy times lower max speed limits lead to higher overall traffic speed. This is because it makes the trafiic flow at a more even rate-not the surges and stops that occurr when it is moving at very different rates with cars darting in and out to overtake and then baulking etc.
I rarely travel on Motorways but it seems fairly logical to me as a fix for busy periods and congested roads, not as a widespread 'solution'.
And I don't agree with the description of train travel above. Maybe it is a regional thing but i'm very happy to use the train for suitable journeys.
Sorry to add fuel to the fire but I use the M42 fairly regularly with its traffic management speed limits (usually 60 during peak times, sometimes 50 but back to normal outside) and it works pretty well. There is masses of traffic but it seems to flow pretty well. I'm normally on it around 8:30am
Mike, you should travel 1st class its much nicer - rarely any Andrew Mitchell plebs and if you book in advance you can get it cheaper than a standard ticket if you just turn up. I booked yesterday for tomorrow and got a great deal but only because my appointment is a 2 min walk from the station otherwise that last mile or so can be the same amount again!!!!
At the risk of upsetting the lorry guys on here, I'm sure you will have experienced the M11 on the 2 lane stretches are a complete nightmare for lorries overtaking each other with about 1mph differential - that and middle lane hoggers get me going.....
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't
What makes me angry is that it is not our Parliament that has come up with this proposal but those bloody Europeans. We don't seem to be able to breath without using their lungs. We are only going to build a nuclear power station with their permission. So much for voting to join a Common Market.
Just to clarify the position regarding why the Highways Agency made the proposal.

Tougher European Union guidelines on air quality have come into force and the agency argued that a lower limit would be needed to ensure these were met on the section from junctions 28 and 35a, which goes past Mansfield, Chesterfield and Sheffield.

I like your thinking Mike.
Over the past 20 years I travelled regularly by train and the only positive thing I can say is that they became more punctual in the past few years; at least on the routes I used regularly..........

Are you sure?
Lorries aren't limited to 50, by law it's 56 ( they can do a lot more downhill if you let them!) many operators set them lower and obviously they have different capabilities depending on engine output and the load being carried.
It would be crazy to limit them to the inside lane.
