    Paint removal

Just overhauling a RV8 engine that I intend to install in my stag. It's painted an orange colour that looks crap. Whats the best way to remove engine paint and whats the best way to make it look good. If engine paint is the answer, what colour's best.

Nitrmors isn't as strong as it used to be unless you can cling film it in so it doesn't dry out. M & M has had a terrible job getting it off the battery box.

I would try cellulose thinners with a brush, well ventilated and see if that pickles up the paint, also depends what paint but celly gets most off.

A dremel with a wire brush fitting might work.

I'd then go for a silver finish (to match the car), but there are a choice of engine paints, even RED! But then black would look good IMO.

    Jeff.

In issue 207 of Classics Monthly there was a test of a number of paint strippers, might be worth a look if you can get your hands on a copy.

As one who used Nitromors last year in an attempt to remove the multiple layers of paint on my Stag I guess I come under the statement:

"That meant many brands had to re-formulate their products to comply and watch as forum trolls rubbished them in ignorance."

I followed the instructions to the letter, resorting to scoring through the layers to help the product penetrate and covering with cling-film to try and keep it from drying out. Evenleaving it all weekend, it barely softened the top layer of paint. Eventually resorted to the DA sander, covering the entire workshop, and everyone in it, in a fine layer of carmine red paint....

Thanks for the info lads, it looks like its going to be a bit of a bugger. Although I suppose I could clean it up and overpaint it.

Just googled "best paint stripper". A product called Starchem gets great feedback. Looks as though you have to be ultra careful with it though.

Had another thought. How about taking it to a grit blaster or buy a small compressor and use a blasting gun, my local garage has one and that should work a treat as long as all the usual safety aspects are dealt with.

Being the engine, it won't distort like body panels.

There is also a mobile blasting company that I reckon could do it, so you may have one locally.

                Just a thought.

Jeff, you need quite a large output compressor for even a small blaster, check the air requirement of the gun carefully, most 2hp compressor will not keep up without frequent stops. derek

Sorry, yes I did say a small compressor. It's because I have seen these guns supplied with compressors and as it's only for the engine, I thought it might do even if it took a month, lol.

I had the same problem with Nitromors, and like you Dave ended up using a DA, I also noticed that it doesn't burn on your skin like it used to either. Not that I recommend you try it

I have a compressor but I'm a bit dubious about grit getting into the engine
