    Battery Isolator.

Have any of you fitted a battery isolator switch, the type with the red removable key, where have you situated it and have you fitted it in a box to prevent easy shorting of the terminals.

    Thanks, Andrew.

    Andrew,

There was one fitted to my Stag when I bought it nearly 6 years ago. It was fitted on a plate fixed in the triangular cutout next the battery. It was one of the first things I removed and replaced it with a Discarnect unit fixed to the -ve battery terminal.

I've have a disconnect (not sure if thats the way you spell it) fit's directly to the battery terminal IMO much easier to fit and safer. Cheer's Graham Note to self type faster

            Good lateral thinking there.

Except I think they intended to burn the car for the insurance?

Another +1 for a Discarnect here. I did have one of the red key types fitted to my old Cobra, down on the transmission tunnel, one day I knocked it off with my foot while driving and burnt out the alternator regulator.

This is the only picture I can find of the isolator as I bought the car. Had to crop it and adjust the brightness settings a bit, so it's not the best photo:

The discarnect seems the easiest for a car like the Stag. Ours came with a traditional key-type fitted to -V, it's out of the way and does it's job, so I'll leave it.
In other cars I have used a switch in the interior (a real switch, not a relay as they can fail), but that's only practical with the battery under the seat (like in a Land Rover Defender) or in the back.
It was required as an emergency cut-off in some competitions. To make sure the engine stops when you turn the switch, you can either keep the alternator connected to +V (which does mean it is still live should you work on the car) or use a double switch that disconnects main feed and ignition separately.

I can see why you changed it (looks a bit messy. I had this type of isolator fitted to my RIB consul which was ideal, but I can't see that this type was designed for cars

                      I love my Discarnect
Just remember that if you get a tracker fitted that they take the earth directly to the battery otherwise you will get a call from the monitoring station every time you disconnect it,

Hi, I have installed 2, Red Key type.I have moved the Battery to under the hood in the well. One is installed next to the battery and the other next to the washer bottle on the strut tower with a fused bypass to keep the clock alive and if any attempt is made to start that will blow that light fuse.
                        Cheers Ian A

There is a French Blue Stag for sale on Cherished Classics website that has one mounted on the offside strut tower.
