What oil do you use in your carb dashpots?

I've always used engine oil as per the ws manual but just looking at the Faversham Classics website today in their user guide they suggest auto transmission fluid - anyone else tried this and if so, what was the result?
Never heard of this before but if it is good for Fav's then maybe it's worth a go...

    Cheers

I use ATF and If i don't have any of that a low viscosity engine oil 0w30 or 0w40 whatever is available. I know lots of people use 20w50 but I think that's too thick, its much thicker than the su dashpot oil that was once available from all good motor factors.

I find thinner oil gives better throttle response but if you go too thin you will get lean stumble on snapping the throttle open. I seem to recall reading that ATF is 5w20 but I could be wrong.

Penrite still make SU carb oil, that's what I use, thinner than engine oil.

3 in 1 works for me.

            hi
Favesham Classics tuned my Stag a couple of years ago and put auto transmission fluid in the dash pots , I did question this and they said it was the best to use and my car runs great ! Definitely recommend it ,

Lubrication is all thats needed IMO, so a thin oil should suffice. Its not as if there is stress and major friction that a thicker oil is called for.

Well you learn something new on this Forum all the time. Have only ever used engine oil and never thought to use anything else, but next time I top the carbs up will have a go with ATF and see if there is any noticeable difference. If ATF gives a better response maybe I should add some to my Brandy glass!

I've always used 3 in 1 or any clean engine oil.

I was advised to use ATF in my 5 speed manual gearbox by Richard Lane (Brighton Stag Specialist).

Not really Sukh, the lubrication is a side effect. As I understand it the real purpose is damping the air valve opening, to avoid a lean flat spot if you snap the throttle open.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Guys - stupid question probably - but does this oil choice have the same effect on both SUs and Stromies or does the oil function differently for each carb type, thanks

                      Cheers

The dashpot oil is used in both SUs and Strombergs to slow a rapid rise in the piston/diaphragm to allow a richer mixture while the engine is accelerating. This is actually what a dashpot is for!

I have to admit to always having used normal (20/50) engine oil. I shall certainly try ATF next time in the Stag and the SUs on my 2000!

                          Cheers,
                          Mike.

Thanks Mike - like you I have only used 20/50 in mine - will try the ATF as well
