    Engine mount failure again GRRRR

    Hi All

Whilst tinkering with the GT6 this afternoon I happened to take a look at the engine mounts and much to my disgust found that the offside mount was on the verge of failing. Hey ho you might say, rubber components don't last forever.

However, to put this engine mount failure into perspective you need to realise that it has only been on the car for 460 miles after the previous mount failed last October. The previous one failed by de-bonding away from the metalwork. See http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...=engine+mounts post no 304 .

This one has simply torn itself to bits. At least this time I spotted the problem before it actual broke in two. Fortunately I had a spare in the garage and fitting the replacement only took 45 minutes as I have become quite a dab hand at doing them given all my recent practice! Having my Goliath crane also helps in these situations.

So, get out there are check your Stag engine mounts as they are an identical item to that fitted to the GT6

    Regards

    Bruce

That's not acceptable Bruce. I trust you will be speaking to the supplier on Monday.......

The annoying thing is the supplier may only be supplying the only available part. The TR7 has rubber mounts for the carbs and ours had failed. I went to Robsport to pick up some new ones and they told me not to bother as the quality of the new ones is so poor that they split in short order.

I still think it would be a good idea to have a separate section on the forum for members to post when they have had a good part( Eg quality and longevity) and the supplier. I know you can not post bad reports but for example if i was looking for a distributor cap I could look on the list for the best posted product and the associated suppler. It could save a lot of time and disappointment Graham

          Graham.
The quality of these parts is a joke, so no chance.

Graham, that's a great idea! Perhaps it would serve as a bit of inspiration to some suppliers to start demanding higher quality products from distributors and manufacturers, ie it would be their worthwhile to find themselves on that list...

Well worth considering it at least.

            Cheers,
            Joakim

You can be assured of that! Plus the replacement I fitted today was bought at the same time as the one that has just failed so I will be watching it like a hawk to see how it lasts.

The quality of some Stag / Triumph parts is totally unacceptable, do owners of other makes of classic have the same problem?

Really annoying for you Bruce but at least the bolts won't be rusted up

I've just been out to check the engine mounts on my Stag and both are cracking quite badly...aaargh!! They have been on since 2008 and have covered about 55,000 miles though so I can't really complain.

I thought I had noticed some harshness this week... now I know why!

If I remember correctly, original mounts were different in the fact that one side had a hollow slit in it to allow more flexing and the other was solid.

This quality is just not acceptable and I expect yet again, its made in India or China.

I have had engine mounts that have failed in short order too. I replaced one that had split after only about three years. The replacement was showing signs of distress after only three weeks. I do now have a mount to put in that I bought as an unused spare from one of our local club guys. It was a voided one. I don't know how long he had it, but it looked fresh and a lot better than any I had bought from the usual suppliers. He said he got it from abinger hammer, but I don't know when he bought it. It didn't look old at all though. It might be worth giving them a call.

                      Regards

How badly does a worn or torn engine mount affect the drivetrain in terms of noise and vibration. I am trying to trace a problem of whining and vibrations on my new gearbox conversion and it has been suggested to check all rubber mounts. But they were the same mounts in the same location as when the engine was pulled out.

I have emailed this company http://www.vibra-technics.co.uk/ they have a great reputation amongst race / rally groups. Its not something they do at the moment, but maybe if we can generate enough interest?

This thread sent me out to the workshop to check my new engine mounts. They look fine.. from the top anyway I didn't get underneath. I'm also trying to track down an engine rattle so seemed a possibility.

                              Hi All

Thanks to a tip off from the Club Triumph Forum on this very topic, I have contacted Moss Europe and purchased a pair of their uprated mounts (UKC8330)

Apparently their mounts are a harder rubber and not hollow, originally designed for a TR8. Only time will tell how they perform on our GT6.

                              Regards
