    Petrol pump (not pumping )

    Hi all

Just been out in the stag gorgeous day roof down Mrs jamcarr next to me and little jamcarr (well not that little )in the back after, about 30 miles the car stopped all the symptoms of running out of petrol .checked the petrol line and no petrol in it so to cut along story shortI hit the petrol pump with a spanner that was in the boot and it started working again and got us home .The question is why ? what would be wrong with a 12month old pump that a bang would fix I cant see how it could be dirt in the petrol cos there would be petrol in the line wouldn't there?

Your contact breakers probably got stuck and a whack freed them up

        Hi John

Don't know mate not unless by some strange coincidence the main body of the pump was out of line and the tap with the spanner freed the internals somehow!:?

Never had this happen so I have never taken one apart but I'm sure someone has and they have a better answer.

You can buy and fit new contacts to the pump quite easily, kits available from here

            http://www.sucarb.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=30764

for a tennerish posted and you can keep your old one as spares.

This seems to be an amazingly common thing to happen. I'm on my third pump this year - the original was "past it", so I fitted a recon.. which lasted about a month, and went back for a refund.

I'm now running with a pump out of an XJ6, and I have a spare in the glove box.. just in case!

                John,

There is an electronic version of the pump available, it does away with points altogether. It looks exactly the same and even has the clicking sound.

                regards,

                Raoul

There is a conversion kit to replace the points with solid state electronics but it is around £40!!

A new pump with mechanical points is around £60 and a solid state pump about £70.

These prices are from memory and may have changed in the last year.

I guess they do not sell many conversion kits but are very happy when they do

                  John.

So am I right in thinking that the electronic ones are more reliable

                      Hi John,

I would say they are, are there are no points to stick, I've never been stuck by the side of the road with my head in the boot bashing the cr*p out of mine since I bought it 5 years ago.

                      regards,
