    Timing chains

After hearing rattling on startup at the end of last year i decided i couldnt risk leaving them all summer till it gets its rebuild next winter.

Thought id upload a few pics for anyone interested.

The chains themselves are renolds so i imagine have been in there quite a while and seem very sloppy and when held up in the air on ther side have about 4 inch of sag, the sprockets are also quite hook shaped.

Im replacing the lot (chains sprockets guides tensioners etc), one of the tensioners has the original renolds body the other isnt named, can anyone advise weather or not to reuse this body, reading back in old posts it seems this is a popular idea? Any thoughs as to how far past it the chains are? Got reciepts back to the early 80's (30000miles + since) with no mention of timing work being done.

    Cheers,
    James

Ive been waiting to do mine as well, had every bolt of a tractor engine and gearbox out so got that back together first, didnt fancy a triumperkins cross breed! Should be in action for march i hope, although it may rain all march anyway!

I got a new, complete kit for the rebuild and found some of the chain guides didn't follow the chain properly, so had to engineer them to fit, may be it was not the best kit available, but it was pricey and contained the German chains...

          Hope to see you soon,Andrew.

My chains, guides, tensioners and gaskets came today, so once my sprockets come and ive had a go at fitting ill let you know how it went. I couldnt decide about chains but finally settled on normal rolon chains, partly because im a bit skint but also ill be changing them pre 25000 anyway. Hard decision.

I dont know if my old guides have hardened with age but on the new ones the rubber seems a little bit softer???

            Cheers

Got the other chain off and rest of the sprockets today, the other tensioner is well past it (see picture)

There seems to be a mix of tensioner parts and ive read other posts about the use of the hollow dowels with different types of tensioner.

There is an original renolds tensioner that has no dowell just a big hole in the block and then theres an aftermarket tensioner that has the hollow dowell between it and the block, this one is on the LH bank.

Does anyone know if this is correct, ill probably be replacing the lot with my new tensioners to keep it all the same. Should i use the dowells or not?

              Thanks,
              James

I seem to remember piecing the old tensioner body(because it has a dowel protruding) and the new tensioner components to give the best outcome.

Dasadrew on here, posted a while back,a good video of the workings of the timing chains etc. A search would probably reveal his diligent portrayal of his timing chain work.
Good photos of the engine bay James.
                  Hope this helps.

                  Andrew.

                    Hi Andrew.
Just replaced my chains I didn't need any thing else as all the other parts were in excellent condition. I was unsure about the right had tensioner with the spacer as mine was without the dowel. I decided that as it was ok like that before I changed the chains so that's how I put things back.
                    Cheers Rob.
