    SOCTFL Cylinder Heads

I believe thisought tohave been announced on our own website first, but instead it has been posted on another.

    PRESS RELEASE
    Stag Owners Club.

SOCTFL unveils new heads for Triumph Stag V8 engines!

At the Stag Owners club National Day, on 20 July 2008 at West Midlands
Safari Park, the Stag Owners Club Tooling Fund Ltd (SOCTFL) were
delighted to unveil a pair of freshly made Brand New Heads for the
    Triumph Stag V8 engine.
    See Photos at

    http://s508.photobucket.com/albums/s323/SOCTFL/Stag%20Cylinder%20Heads/

Also present was a car which has run 2000 miles with a pair of these heads.

The heads are the property of Abinger Hammer Motors who are the main
contractor for the project employing sponsorship and substantial
    expert technical input from SOCTFL.
In the small Surrey village of Abinger Hammer, Abinger Hammer Motors
have been servicing and mechanically restoring Triumph Stags for 30
    years.
Additionally on show was a resin copy of the complex model of the
core, which is a 3D representation of the cores in the heads and which
are made from casting sand in production and use 18 components.
This casting is just the first stage in a multistage process involving
    5 subcontractors.
When a casting, made in LM25, the alloy as used in the original Triumph
heads, passes pressure testing, the detailed machining takes place
including the very critical line boring of the camshaft bearing
    surfaces.
Thereafter the head is assembled with valve gear and other
parts. The customer's existing camshafts will normally be used as they
are generally good and new ones scarce or expensive.

The patterns for making castings and machining drawings have been
produced by a process called reverse engineering. This means working
back measuring unused original spare parts.

In the case of these heads, the measuring was done using a very
accurate computerised process organised by SOCTFL.

SOCTFL only supply funding and expertise and act on behalf of the Stag
Owners Club. They own no tools, no patterns and no parts stock except
an example library collection. They have no liability for product.
If you are interested in these heads please contact Abinger Hammer
    Motors directly.

This is a very exciting project, which most would have been thought
virtually impossible and yet SOCTFL's Mike Fisher and Roger Morrish of
Abinger Hammer Motors have pulled it off.

Major Vehicle Manufacturers find similar projects costly and
difficult, and when a Classic Car Club and an enthusiastic Motor
Engineer work together to achieve component production at this level
of complexity, it has to rank as almost being in the same league as
    Miracles.

Hearty congratulations to those involved with much of the effort being
    purely voluntary

    Peter Howells Admin Officer SOCTFL

Don't forget the 'other' is the original email based Triumph Stag mailing list that has been in existance for 10 years, plus is Peter Howells (Admin Officer SOCTFL) 'home', so not surprising really!

I spoke at length with Peter at national day and the story of the Millenium Heads is quite interesting, we are really lucky that we have the option of a new pair of heads if necessary , although quite expensive it has to be said!

          Cheers,

          Mike

I asked Mike how much the heads will be he told me approx £2000 fully built up with the customers cams. I will wait to see exactly how much they will be.

I had a look at the casting and it has been slightly modified from standard but due to the restrictions of the head design only minor improvements have been made according to Mike Fisher.

LM25 aluminum is the industry standard for cylinder head and block castings, the biggest problem with LM25 is when casting the gas/air in the die sometimes doesn't get out during the process, this causes porosity in the metal and when machined leads to pitting of the surface and gas leaks if really bad.

Stag cylinder heads upto around 1975 suffered from this which may explain why some heads consistently have warping problems. If anyone does buy some of these heads check the milled surfaces very carefully for what look like pin pricks in the surface.

Overall I would like to congratulate Mike and his team for getting the heads done so those of us who are on our last skim have an alternative!

Now all we need is Jackshafts and camshafts to go with them!!

On other threads it is advised that when removing/refitting the inlet manifold, for example that it is a good idea to helicoil the bolt holes, I'm wondering if this has been addressed with the new heads..? I hope this comment isn't seen as undermining this huge achievement, just curious

The head on display was not heli-coiled, it did pass my mind when I saw the tapped ali holes!

Yes I noticed this aswell Mike what bothered me was the lastest technology used by all manufactures is to roll tap the threads as it is 10 X stronger than a cut thread which these are!

I know SOCTFL have to work to a budget but this is just stupid as a cut tap will do around 10 - 14000 holes but have more breakages due to swarf problems where as roll taps have no swarf and do 25000 holes or more!

Alot of the tools used in the making of these heads are not the best that could have been used due to budget constraints and the small volumes involved but credit to Mike etc they found a way of getting the best out of what they had.

We may well be peeved that this first appeared on another site. Well done to DJT for spotting it and posting it on this Forum.

BUT IT IS A STAG OWNERS CLUB PRESS RELEASE.

Ihave tried without success to find mention of it in the SOC Website. Yet another example of how little attention is paid to this technology. I look forward to reading the text in the next magazine, when it arrives.

                      Brian,

I also searched the SOC website for a trace of this before posting it on here, but nothing. It seems it was released about a week ago for publication, but none of those involved got around to putting it on our own website. No doubt it will be in the September magazine, but that is weeks away yet................

I had a look as well. If you read the SOCTFL part of the website you would assume that they have done nothing at all since early December which is obviously not the case. If it isn't updated regularly it gives an incorrect and poor reflection of the SOCTFL and the obvious good work that they are doing.

So on that note - Congratulations on the Cylinder heads, a truely fantastic achievement. Well done to all involved.

I read somewhere the other day that Triumph were looking at a 32 valve version of the engine - I don't know if it ever got of the drawing board though.
