    Water pump

Why oh why do PO bodges always seem sooooo bad.
I wonder if owners of my previous cars say the same about me!!
Just taken the water pump out to fix a horrible oil leak into the V, and found a baaaaad thing. The cage had obviously been jammed in at sometime in its life, and had been cut with a hacksaw to release it. Not so bad I hear you say, but the muppet had cut into the block as well, leaving a lovely path to the opening beneath, right across the upper o ring sealing area.
Not only that, but the brass cage was a horrible fit into the aperture it fits into, no leeway to allow the o rings to centre and seal. No wonder the bl**** thing leaked so bad.
I also noticed the vanes were hitting the cover slightly, should I fit a slightly thicker washer under the vane top bolt??
Awaiting comments from you experts out there please.
    Regards
    Dave

You need to shim the cover away from the impeller with a thicker gasket Dave. (the gaskets come in 3 thickness's)

When the pump cover is fitted there are 3 different thickness gaskets to allow you to raise the cover above the vanes.
If you read the workshop manual it will tell you how to do that..
Also there are two different pumps,a 12 and a 6 vane. Each has its own cover..

So many people struggle with this on the TV8 engine. The pump is a weak area and if not fitted properly can leak some or all of the time..

Personally when i come to do mine I will be fitting an external kit to do away with pump on top of the block..

      Hope this helps

        measure it like this

no gaskets, tighen down the top cover evenly until it wont go down more, dont use your 3foot breaker bar to do this!!!! then measure the gap

add the feeler gauge to a gasket to get the gap to the tolerances in the haynes manual.

        Simples

          Thanks for the replies.
The main point i was asking was should the bolt head contact the cover before the vanes??

hmmm i think the bolt head should. but you dont want to run it like that hense the method of shimming up for the correct gaskit. so that the bolt is 15thou or whatever clear of the cover, and the pump should be efficient. do you have a washer under your bolt head?

If the vanes are touching I would suspect that you have a mismatch in pump/cover. The 6-vane impellor and 12-vane impellor need their appropriate covers. Could be someone has changed something in the past.

could be a mismatch between cover and pump

The bolt head shouldn't touch the cover at all, which is why you shim it away with the gaskets

                        Ta to everyone.
Yes there is a washer under the bolt, but i dont think its the proper one, as its diameter is smaller than the bolt head.
                        More fiddling around methinks!
