    Stag at Prescott

At last, I've finally found the site and successfully logged on! Hello to the Fairmile crowd.

Stagdad/Steve; thanks for the U-tube footage; good camera work!

Finally, Triumph versus Rover engines; discuss!!

A few ESM's ago in Switzerland the only car to overheat over the mountain passes had a Rover engine. QED!

Welcome stoutgoose, I personally don't mind Rover engined Stags as they have most likely had a terminal failure of the Triumph engine and rather than give up on the car put in a more economical fix to the problem at the time.

When you look at Monstags car you see how good the Rover lump can look if done right! However this does ask questions because his conversion probably cost as much as doing the Triumph V8 properly (Jon will fill this bit in for sure).

The other thing you don't get with the Rover engine is that unique OHC V8 sound of the Triumph unit and after all that was probably the one thing that turned your head many years ago and made you say I want one of them!

Mr Goose, finally you have logged on - good to see you at the Fairmile last time, and to see you giving it large pulling away.
I must confess to being a bit of a convert engine wise when looking at yours, probably the best installation I have seen to date and sorry monstag that even includes yours!.
you still can't beat the original engine for sound. (even with standard pipes) traditionalist as I am, I must admit it does have it's limitaions if you want to improve performance.

looking back it was the original package that made me want a Stag in the first place, great looks, great sound - albeit with a frail engine that an eye must be kept on, I can see why you and many others have changed for the RV8, but for me it does loose it's 'soul' a little - that said if my engine blows up it will be a lot cheaper to fit a RV8 which is when I shall be knocking on your door for advice.

and of course you don't get problems with RV8 heads - or do you

        Ian

          Hi Ian.

Yup, head gasket failure followed by water-pump!

I love the sound of the Stag engine and like OHC's too; the Excel motor show had a rather nice V10 Nissan motor on a stand which looked like it might fit! However until I have an excuse.......

Have you seen Steve's YouTube post?

Hi very nice detail work (busy taking notes)

Looking at the video footage, are you running 15" wheels? they look really good.

My inherited stag is currently undergoing a facelift but here is a pic of the conversion my dad did back in the 70's and untouched apart from the new weber carb. It will be good for reference to before and after.

            Thanks for the inspiration

you now have the excuse to put a larger RV8 in!, I was at the Prescot meet and watched your car go up, Didn't bother with mine as it's just not the same with a BW65 gearbox. My car is all noise and no go - but a nice noise

What happened then did the Stag engined cars overheat in the valleys before the mountain passes?

The wheels are 16" Image split-rims with Toyo's on them. I had to do this to allow alteration of the rear wheel off-set in order to fit the BMW sub-frame.

                  Good luck with your project.

                  (Love the above reply!!)

This is addictive! Liked the Stag convoy, but thought you were going to miss the turn and end up in Dover!

Shaun; is there a link for Le Mans? A friend of mine went this year, I took the Stag to the 24hour in June, not knowing about the classic race. Really looking forward to going in 2010.

What was it like driving the circuit? Which groupdid you go with, and any problems?

                          Steve.
