What size Wurth inserts for inlet manifold bolts?

I have snapped an inlet manifold bolt and need to remove it and am intending to use a Wurth/Time-sert insert rather than Helicoil. [My other bolt holes are fairly poor, so thinking of doing these with inserts also]
The bolts are 5/16'' 18 [UNC] thread I believe, and the bolts go 1 inch into the aluminium heads. The inserts come in various lengths up to 0.75 inch; will a 3/4'' inch insert be sufficient? [the insert is open at the end]
    Thanks,
    Dave.

It's up to you Dave, but I personally would do the first repair with a Helicoil. If anything should go awry with that, then you can go up to an insert. If you go straight down the insert road then you get no chance for a second repair. I've replaced two helicoils from the previous owner on my Stag and was able to rescue the holes by opening up the hole for an insert.

Fraid I can't help you at the mo with the depth.

    The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

      Hi Dave.
I suppose I was lucky with only one inlet manifold bolt snapping (flush with the head) and I just drilled and helicoiled it. Fairly easy and no problems so far!
      Good luck with it,

      Mark.

Dave, Helicoils will be more than adequate (run the tap in without opening the holes up with a drill) and if in the future one gets damaged with a bit care you can tease them out again and refit another.

          Thanks Drew, Mark and Ian,
Helicoils it will be then as needed and I'll not have to order the Wurth insert kit from the States and wait for delivery (its twice the price from Worth UK!)

Whoever fitted the manifold previously used far too much sealant and some of the waterways were almost blocked, and where the threads were worn, they simply applied the same sealant to the bolts, and some of them came out with the sealant thick along the length of the bolt threads, which looked worrying.

That's pretty well blocked! Hopefully you'll get better flow and cooling now! That's made me worry about the sealant I used now.......
            Cheers,
