    chassis tilter

    im thinking of making a chassis tilter,but want to make it height adjustable as well, thought it would make it easier getting the car on and off,was thinking of two tube one inside another with a bolt thought the middle to adjust, do you think that would work ? or do you have any other ideas ?

      Dave I wouldn't go to the effort, just make a standard jig (copy mine if you like). I say that because I got my cat up on the jig on my own last week in about an hour just using a decent lift trolley jack and some careful moving of the jig. Easy really

                    Dave,

                    My millstone is currently up on a spit and to be honest I doubt I could do the work involved without it. Here's an extract from a post of mine, note the angle on the turning pin between right way up and upside down. Mine 'fell off' the pins ( down 150mm onto the T bar, no damage thankfully) when upside down because of the flexing in the supports, the collars welded on stopped this.

                    "Spit pins were at right angle when car was right way up, framework good ant tight. no play.............

                    when car was upside down, there was some movement on the mountings, not the body or chasis legs, and the pin angle changed.

                    without the addition of the collars on the pin, when working on the car the movement caused would cause the pin to drop off the frame and the car drop onto the T bar...oops"

                    I also added some bracing at the rear, don't know if it was needed but took little to do.

                      I'd suggest it all depends upon your design. Personally I shamelessley copied Neil's simple but effective construction http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...rs-new-project With hindsight, scope for using the spits to support each end of the car would have been very usefull as my trolley jack slipped when the car was being jacked up, just when I was underneath it straightening some rigid support for the car to be lowered to. Luckily the car's chassis landed on to axle stands, but it was definately a squeeky bum moment.

                      I am not an engineer but a suitable tube inserted into the uprights may reduce the effect of compromising the upright by it having holes drilled at different heights.

                      On the other hand, again depending upon your design, you may find there are difficulties in lining up your holes unless the car was to be raised evenly and horizontally. For example say the front of the car is fixed to one of the spits and you raise the back by 20 - 25 cms, your bolts through the upright will be horizontal, but either the body or whatever you use to fix the body to the spit, will be at an angle. And similarly the bolts at the other end or whatever they are connected to on the body, will be being put under tension, because they too will not be horizontal.
