    Faulty Speedo ?

AT last .......my rebuild is complete and the family were able to enjoy a fantastic day at the National Day.

My question is that my speedo quivers or shakes constantly, more at some speeds than others. I have searched the forum and cannot see that this has been discussed previously, so either its a general fault with cars of that age that everyone accepts or I have an unique problem.

Any comments or suggestions, as Im not sure the speed camera's will make any allowances for the fact i was going somewhere between 30 and 40 !

Normally not too serious, just the cable needs lubricating.

3 in 1 oil that sort of thing works, If not new cable required.

      Thanks Sssssssssss

So, if I try to lubricate the cable, is this along its whole length , or just a particular bit ?

And how do I get at it, by taking the speedo out ?

Reply as if to a 4 year old and I will probably understand !!

      Thanks

        Hi Mate,

Remove the speedo and you will see where the cable attaches by a knurled cap, remove cable (unscrew and withdraw inner cable from drive in speedo)

Then drip feed the 3 in 1 oil down into the speedo cable (bit of a long job) exactly how much will be required is any ones guess but keep going untill uou get bored

As stated lubricate the cable either with oil or grease (remove the cable) also check the cable is routed correctly as you say you have done a rebuild it might be routed wrong.

You should be careful oiling the speedo cable as it can get into the speedo,my speedo varied by about 10mph and I tried rerouting and oiling it, but I eventually had it serviced at speedy cables, and it is now perfect.

It's probobly worth trying a new cable as they can develop a thread which the cable can snag causing it to jump when when it clears it self

My speedo was doing the same and snapped after around 200 miles.

We've got similar speedo fluctuations and on occassion it gets stuck at 30mph a lower speeds -how tricky a job is the cable to replace on a BW35 gearbox ?
