best alternator?

The title speaks for itself really, I need a new one and the cost is variable for the original 45amp.
I thought if I'm spending some money, may aswell get a decent one!
So, I was wondering which alternator would be the best and whether they come with the voltage regulator built in as standard?
Any advice would be great.

I want a higher out put alternator, Wards do one at about £80...is it a good un? Here's why I ask, an after market one for my Rangy was about £100 mark, genuine Landrover was near £700 and is a quality item. Is there an issue with the cheap ones, ie are they poor quality foreign makes...can anyone throw any light on the subject.

Sam, the higher output only becomes an issue if the Alternator is being used to run extra stuff, i.e headlights, Electric fan etc.

It's not pumping out the full amps all the time only when a demand is made on it. Its' output then will try and match the demand up to its Maximum. You also need to take in to account the current the extras are drawing and use suitable cable for them as well.

NO I didnt when it was in it's original place and I am using heavy load 400 watt head lights Ect. I have made a new loom up now since I have moved the alternator in readiness for a Stagdad pump.Graham

Ive got one of those to go on mime as well.
So I will need to move the alternator as well.I forgot about that..thanks

I upgraded as when i fitted Wards headlight loom it put too much load on alternator. It was very noticeable when i switched on main beam, I also had to modify the loom as straight from wards if main beam was used the dipped lights where still on.
on the plus side the ebay alternator fits straight on the wards Bracket.

If you have a genuine Lucas alternator, a replacement set of carbon brushes might only be what is required!
