How long can you keep petrol in a can before it goes stale and unusable? or is it safe to put into a nearly full tank of fresh petrol. If it has gone off how do you dispose of it.?

I would have no qualms putting in with fresh petrol. Graham
Provided the can is well sealed then it will keep for well over 12 months. The stuff I "burn" in my lawnmower is well over 3 years old - drained from a car I scrapped that long ago. The mower was getting a bit reluctant to start towards the end of last year though so the remnants may have to be relegated to cleaning fluid this year. Also got a Makita Disc cutter that hadn't been used for at least 2 years, that started 2nd pull a fortnight ago.
If it really has gone off then I use it to wash off oily parts in my cleaning trays, then burn the residue - by then it is more oil than petrol so is not volatile at all.
If you really want to then just add it to a full tank as you suggest, I suppose you could get into the habbit of doing this once per year to ensure the petrol in the can is always usable.

Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!
I started my Stag with a tankful of petrol that was 7 years old, it ran fine but I wouldn't recommend it.
Your local council tip will take it,
Treat petrol of any age with total respect; I have seen what it is capable of. I wouldn't be using it as cleaning fluid or to wash my overalls in [yes people have done that...]
Dave.
