    I Love My 4x4

I love my 4X4.Today at work I have towed a trailer (3.5T) to Macclesfeild and delivered some products for a friend. I have cruised down the A50 and collected a customer from the airport, I have taken him on a tour of our quarry. Tonight I have to do the taxi thing for 6 people and take the wife shoppering. In the morning I have to take the dog to the vets and then pick up my granddaughter and take her out for the day, then off to wedding tomorrow night in Oxford (once I find my best suit) And all this in safety and luxury, all this at 34 mpg and only £220 road tax. What other car could you do all this with?

Oh, I may even splash through a few puddles on my way home from work.

I'm loving my new toy honda crv with every conceivable extra. Nearly 40 k new now and I certainly didn't pay that. Glass roof heated leather seats front radar that tightens your seat belt even before you react to accident . Cruise control takes some getting used too as it scans the car in front to keep the right safe distance . Dogs love it too .

Loved our 2008 Discovery HSE, amazing vehicle, however sold it after 18 months or so.

Less than 40K miles and 4 years old it needed a new steering rack @ £1200, car had never been off road or abused, rack was 'leaking'.......great! Fortunately we had a warranty that covered it. Then there were the usual ball joints that wear out once they have been over a couple of pot holes or covered a couple of hundred miles, another expensive job. Then the battery that kept going flat, oh that will be the tailgate swith/lock thingy sir, I had that fixed and still no good. A new battery followed, they are the useless calcium type, once flattened they seem to be knackered.....great on a car notorious for faults that cause the battery to go flat! There were other issues as well, so we decided to get rid.

A great vehicle if you have a belt and braces warranty and deep pockets for the normal running/service costs etc. One of the most ridiculous things that I came across via the Disco forums was the issue of rusting brake pipes. The chimps that designed/specified it used steel or similar for the brake pipes (this is on a £50K car) and when they rust (some after as little as 3 to 4 years) the BODY has to come off the chassis to replace the fore-aft pipes.........

I also enjoyed learning of the body off routine to replace the turbo on the Disco 3, however mechanics eventually found a way around this........ so, when the Disco 4 was launched it had 2 turbos!!! I don't think they have found a shortcut for that one yet?

Yes, a fantastic vehicle, but I don't think that I will ever buy another one!

      Cheers
      Keith

My dogs Subaru Forester is a fantastic AWD vehicle. It's handled the wet sticky Texas black mud when a Toyota 4x4 was unable to, heavy wet snow, etc
Cheap, reliable, and decent mpg. In 80k miles all I've done besides normal maintenance (oil/filter, belts, plugs, tires) is install a downstream O2 sensor. Which truth be told anyone could do.
Oh, and while my dog does apparently own the car she does not drive. She prefers a chauffeur as it allows her to concentrate on 'work'.

Sounds like you got a lemon Keith, a friend had a 57 plate which was a total nightmare, mines done 120k other than proper servicing it's had an EGR valve, pads and discs and a few bushes.

A lot of 4wd around here seem intent on taking up more than there fair share of road when driving around the lanes as if they're scared of the mud and puddles at the edges, and they never slow down coming towards you.

Just continuing my earlier thread, nothing personal against real 4wd users who really need them, just don't like the idiots that seem to be around my area who don't know how to behave properly.

In some ways I agree with you Steve, we live at the end of a long lane which in places is narrow though you can easily go "off road" to squeeze past. When my wife meets a "posh" 4x4 in her little MX5 they rarely if slow down or move over. However, when we meet exactly the same "posh" 4x4 with the same driver in our Landy (which by the way is not as wide as the MX5!) guess what! they immediately slow down and move over - proving they can be considerate, or perhaps it is all down to intimidation!

P.S. also have a trailer which has been known be used to move a classic car or two - including a Stag.

I agree, there are way too much posh SUVs (can't really call them 4x4s...) driven by people that are afraid to move even an inch off of the tarmac. When I'm in the Range Rover, I always move over as far as I can when encountering other cars, because I can. Which usually means I neither car has to slow down too much, and it often earns me a little wave of appreciation. When it's an SUV/4x4, one would expect them to move over a bit as well, something they often don't like. If we're in the Stag or the Esprit, I would like to get the same courtesy I always give when I can, but this is rarely the case. I remember one Kia 4x4 (I think) that was quite annoyed/angry having to drive through a puddle because I wouldn't take the Esprit to the grass shoulder to give him more space.

I have run 4x4for years and several local members have had cars picked up, moved, rescued etc by my disco , however it could not be classed as reliable,so it had to go, after the warranty expired. I am currently running a left field choice a Nissan murano, it's 3.5 litre petrol, likes a drop of fuel, at 25 mpg but is quiet, comfortable, automatic, fast RELIABLE, and dirt cheap to buy, i do about 40 k a year but get my fuel supplied so I am trying the buy a BIG cheap car pay next to notwithstanding for it and change it regularly. I have put 25k on it so far in 6 months so it's still worth nothing. Next maybe a nissan pathfinder, Masada CX7, I do need 4x4 and high ground clearance once I get to site and I hate pickups. It's working for me
Standard stag thrashed and enjoyed, Nissan Murano ( very underrated, very thirsty, very fast)

I agree Roger a great 4x4, if I was going on a long trip across a third world country then I would take yours as just about any garage/workshop any place in the world can fix it with just 5 spanners and a hammer ! Things move on, things improve and I couldn't drive yours everyday. A bit like a STAG, great fun for the weekends. Keep the faith Roger
