    RV8 fitment issues?

    Hello chaps

Just after some advice. My Stag currently has a Rover V8 and LT77 box. I've just had the diff repaired as it needed a new front shaft and bearing as the prop caused damaged due to the muppets that did the convention using a extention piece on the end of the prop and not balancing it

Anyway I've just had a new prop made and fitted and it was noted that the box is sitting at and angle with the end of the box being down. The engine is low enough but obviously this all needs correcting. I've looked at Monarchs website and they seem to list parts I.e. Rover V8 mounts etc, but does anyone know the parts that I would need? and could you advice anyone with the skills to do it that is Lancashire based?

    Thanks a lot

    Regards

    Rob

Hi Rob the box can sit at an angle as you have u/js on prop which allow the prop shaft not to be in exact line with diff

Although the angle between engine-gearbox-back axle is unlikely to be dead in line it is important the UJs are not overly stressed or they will constantly suffer from early failure. I seem to remember a maximum of 7 degree out of line in any one plane is recommended as a maximum.

In the Land Rovers that use the RV8 and LT77, box and engine aren't perfectly horizontal either. And the rear axle is quite a bit lower than the gearbox output. As long as both flanges are parallel (give or take the 5-7° mentioned), the actual angle of the propshaft doesn't really matter, as long as the UJs don't bind (usually around 25°). On lifted Landies we use propshafts with wide yoke UJs, to allow greater angles. But if the flanges on the diff and gearbox aren't parallel, that will still give vibrations and increased wear.

It is possible that the wear to the diff extension shaft is normal. A few people on here have had to strengthen the front extension housing and replace the front bearing... due to normal wear and tear as it happens even to oem spec cars.

Thanks for the advice chaps I'll try and see if I can get a measurement to see how far it's out. I think I'm also going to drop the box again as the the gear change has gone really stiff and it's hard to engage or find a gear.
