Starting issue

I have just finished doing some work on my rover v8 in my stag (offenhauser manifold, 4 barrel eidlebrook carb , new water pump , starter motor refurb, ) any way after giving the battery a good charge ready to start the engine and with the gearbox in neutral it won't start. put the gearbox into park and it starts .should it start both neutral and park?
the question is ,is the inhibitor switch at fault or is it something else . Any advice would be helpful

they should start in park and neutral,i would check the inhibitor switch is there any adjustment

I have not looked at it yet . Just wanted to know if I was looking in the right direction.maybe it will come back to life on its own cos it used to work fine last time it was used about 10 months ago.

There is an access panel on passenger side of transmission tunnel which allows you to get at the switch.
