    Door Handles

I have purchased some new door handle bowls to go with my new paint but have never done this job before!

Anyone got any tips or instructions for the removal, stripping and re assembling of the handles.

    Help much appreciated.

I did mine a while ago, wasn't too difficult, unclipped the arm and unbolted the handles from inside, you have to remove it at an angle and fairly carefully. You'll be ok just play it by ear!

I can do you a scan of the ROM for the removal/replace of the handles from the doors, but I think you're also asking about stripping the handles themselves. They were originally sold as a compete unit so it's not covered in the manual.

If you want one to experiment on I think I've got a couple of old ones somewhere.

Watch the length of the bolts you fit , there is a little top hat to space the bolts , I replaced my bolt and it was to long so it damaged the new handle , Works ok but bugs me.

Dont bother buying new bolts and cupped washers, the cupped washers are too shallow and the bolts are too long. Best use your old, but you'll find the bolt threads in the new bowls not too good, I had to use a thread cutter to clean up the new threads. I also had to slightly widen the holes in the bowls to fit the original spindels and also the new plastic handles.

To remove the plastic handle from the old bowl there is a rivet with a plastic washer that you'll need. So even if you are not using the original plastic handle you'll need to remove the rivet to get this washer.Unfortunately I could not remove the plastic washer without destroying the rivet, the rivets are unobtainable according to Tony Hart.My solution was to replace the rivet with a suitable sized clevis pin, with a couple of small washers to spacing - worked a treat.

New drivers side plastic handles were unobtainable as of a few weeks ago, only new passenger side plastic handles are available.

Fitting the chrome handles back is a real pain, the new door handle gaskets are too thick, which means you cannot slip the bowl top over the door skin with the gasket in place. I eventually reused my old handle gaskets, they were the correct thickness.

I found it best to do door bowls before any window frame etc were in place, so you have extra room. Door to lock spindal will need adjusting too, inevitably this will go out of adjustment when you remove, replace bowl.

It was all straightforward, only complications were new parts that, again, were not correct in size or quality.
