      Hi

Sad to hear of your problems. If you are nervous about working on the engine it might be worth your while calling Keith at Tynwald in Warrington. He specialises in Stags and has done engine work for several people on here including ukbiggles and Just Peter.

      Regards

You won't need to release the chain tension. The manual explains how to remove the chain with sprocket from the camshaft and secure it so it doesn't slip a tooth. One thing triumph dud think through when designing the engine.

Good luck getting the head off!

That's what the extended brackets and studs on the cam shafts are for, they also prevent the tensioners coming out any further

The odds are the reason the valve snapped was that the cam follower or valve stem was corroded to the head after a two year lay up.

If it was one of the two rear cylinders where the waterway is, it may be as a result of damp from a leaky inlet manifold gasket.

The cam pushed the valve open but the spring wasn't able to shut it again resulting in it being clobbered by the piston. The valves normally bend (at least the inlets do) but if it is an exhaust valve that has snapped it may be because the metal is harder.

At least you got the head off quickly, a miracle in itself!, The rest of the rebuild should be relatively simple, best of luck!
