    Historic Tax due 1st. April

An accident in September 2012 changed my tax renewal date and when my car was back on the road it was taxed from the 1st. April 2013. This was rather fortunate as this corresponded with the renewal date for this year being when my car, first registered in August 1973, became classified as historic and free of tax duty. Because of being first registered in August 1973 I did not apply for a Heritage Certificate to prove the build date and thus I was wondering how the tax renewal form from DVLA would treat my car. It arrived this morning and shock horror it requested the usual payment of £225 for renewing the tax from the 1st. April. I went on-line but there was no section where I could obtain a new tax disc free of duty. So I had to phone DVLA and received the following instructions. I had to wait until the 1st. April and take the tax renewal form, V11, together with the car's registration certificate, V5C issue 3/11, to a car tax issuing Post Office. On the certificate V5C go to section 7 and on the last line "Tax Class" fill in "historic". Sign and date the certificate in section 8 and the Post Office will give me a tax fee disc. The certificate V5C does show the date of the first registration.

I know this issue has been raised before but perhaps not this particular aspect.

Yes good info but in my case the v5 states first registered 27th January 1974 but I have a cert from the club stating manufactured Oct/Nov 1973 so I suppose I will have to go directly to DVLA and probably wait weeks! Bummer!!

Mine is the same as yours rac , I rang the dvla this week and was told that all we have to do is ,
One or two weeks before april the first is fill out section 7 of the log book to get it changed to historic tax send that off with current mot and proof of 1973 manufacture to the dvla (Recorded delivery )
They will send back new log book and FREE tax disk , and if you have any tax left on your old disk you can even send that back when your new one arrives to get a refund
Im not sure why they want the MOT as it should all be on the system ??
      hope this helps

Cheers for that John yes as you say surely the mot is on their system but I suppose you have to play the game or you wont get anywhere! Its a pity now as April 1st is approaching that the DVLA haven't issued some sort of advice/statement as to how to proceed as there must be a lot of owners of classic cars in the same boat -perhaps they don't want us to know?

          Hello,
In an effort to be organised and to enjoy tax free motoring from 1st April I sent off my V5C, MOT, V10 and a copy of the Heritage Certificate to Swansea to arrive around the beginning of March. On Friday I received all the documents back with a letter entitled ‘Historic Reject’! The letter contained the information that ‘only vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1973 qualify for the historic tax class’. No mention of the impending change or what one might have to do. My Stag was registered in January 1974 but was made on 3rd December 1973.
I telephoned and spoke to a very helpful lady called Nicola who advised as follows: the current regulations will be applied until 31st March, then the new regulations will apply from 1st April. Documents need to arrive on or after 1st April and should be sent to postcode SA99 1DZ, discs should arrive within two weeks and amended V5’s within four weeks.
I did ask the burning question, can I drive it right away without the disc in my possession, as it’s free? That apparently; cannot be recommended. This is not quite the same info as others have been given but I post it to add to the discussion.
          John.

Usually you can renew your road tax in advance but, as John has found out, you cannot apply for a first time tax free disc until the 1st. April, as the DVLA won't apply the new ruling until then.

Having just bought (well nearly 6mths ago now) a 'K' reg stag, I have just spent the freest 2 minutes of my life.
Online, filled in details, tax disc issued and in the post - cost £0.00.
Now if only the MOT will be as easy on 14th May !!
