Those pesky dowel bolts.....again !

I'm waiting to put my gearbox M.O.D. onto the engine.
But the gearbox came without the bolts ?? especially the original dowel bolts needed to align them up.
Does anyone have the original gearbox bolts anywhere and can spare the dowel bolts or is anyone braking a MOD and will sell me the bolts......

Bolt Dowel UNF 150743 or BH914 or HB914

£0.67 INC VAT

High Tensile Bright Zinc Plate BZP 3/8 UNF Bolt used to attach the oil transfer housing cover plate.
Also can be used as the Dowel bolts for the gearbox attachment but hex heads may need sides grinding off a little.
BH914 and BH606141 are both official factory supersessions and our supply for this item is sourced on Land Rover.
The item offered here is thicker in the shank than standard 3/8 bolts and they will help better align your clutch.
However for best alignment results use HB824SP Special Bolt
This assumes good holes which are not belled out.

What l would like is some of the original dowel bolts from a scrapper (if possible)

apologies if the link didn't take you to HB824SP (it should have) - i thought you simply wanted to get the alignment spot on - i'm sure someone will be along with better advice soon enough.

Being that most of the cars that come in for clutches/gearboxes/engines no longer have their dowel bolts, I have machined a special set of extra long dowel bolts that I fit, put all the rest of the bolts in and tighten, then remove the dowels and fit their ordinary bolts in....

Works really well for me, and I don't have to worry about having the other dowel bolts kicking around...

Couldn't you make some and then just leave them in ??

These are about 5 inches long, no thread and are also an aid to refitting the gearbox by giving an initial guide to bellhousing alignment before the splines engage as well as when it's fully up - they are less of a dowel bolt and more a dowel made from a much larger bolt

1) Are they fitted on the MOD gear boxed cars ?
2) Did all MOD cars have the 2 bolts and the special bolt (ldparts)
3 ...........?

1 all MOD gearboxes have 1 fixed dowel @ 12 o'clock and 2 dowel bolts @ 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock (ish)

these dowel bolts should have a none threaded shank 0.375" dia the bolt head and fixing nut are 1/2" "across flats" and not 9/16" as should be the norm for this size bolt.
The LD "special bolt" is a 5/16" dia bolt that is fitted to the bottom of the gearbox, my view is that if all 3 of the above "dowels" are fitted correctly then the lower "LD" bolt should not be required.

I've never heard about the dowel. Only the 2 dowel bolts.
Although I called a Stag specialist this afternoon who insisted that after 40 years of fixing Stags has never used or seen a dowel bolt..............!!!
