kick down cable

Question for you autobox experts on here, perhaps i'm looking at something which is normal. At rest the kickdown cable crimp is just off the adjuster but after running the engine or operating the throttle manually the cable seems to stick with the crimp resting about 3/4 inch away,i can manually push the cam/cable back to it's original position as though there should be some sort of return spring somewhere-have tried with a temp spring and is quite easy to get it to return. Haven't been able to go out on the road yet to try it(waiting for my free tax!) but the car moves back and forth ok.
Is this normal-does the cable return with oil pressure in the box?--Have disconnected the cable and pulled it in/out of the gearbox easily.

There is a spring on the snail cam that operates the throttle(kickdown) valve inside the box and it is not very strong - it sounds like the routing of your cable is wrong and it's causing it to bind and the spring can't return it fully - check it especially where it comes up to the carbs by the coil - that's where it is frequently misrouted and often kinked

Hmm I see, thought perhaps there should be some kind of return spring on the cam on the carbs themselves- so shouldn't upset anything by fitting a spring on this cam itself so the kickdown pulls in and out with the throttle cable pull-is this supposed to happen like this?
Checked the cable routing as you suggested seems ok-when I pull on the kickdown cable (whilst disconnected)there is not much resistance and doesn't return on it's own I have to ease it back so with my tempory spring fitted to the cam on the carb it returns back into the gearbox ok. Guess I need a road test to see how it goes just didn't want to do any harm by making the kickdown move in and out with the throttle cable. Sounds as if the spring in the box is kaput then
