Rust proofing product sounds like "Shuch"

    Hi team

Strictly speaking this isn't Stag related but it will be when I clean the underside of ours and paint it up in the summer.

I've just collected my Defender after a lot of work including a new rear cross member. He wouldn't fit a galvanised one as he won't weld it so it's a plain one. He's sprayed it with something he call "Shuch" but he didn't know how to spell it. Said it was a bit like anti chip paint but that they always used it and it was great protection.

I'd like to buy some to do the rest of the Defender chassis and the Stag. But does anyone know what it's really called?

    Cheers

    Hi Chris

It's Shutz, there are a few versions available, underseal, cavity wax & stone chip. You will also need a gun to spray it, it fits to the top of the can, they cost about £8 ish.

I don't blame the guy not welding galvanised - the fumes that come off are bloody awful and toxic...

        Hi Chris,
Make sure that when you do it you spray all of the insides of the box sections, chassis outriggers and make sure that the guy sprayed inside the rear box section. If the rear box section has gone then speaking from experience the out riggers, and main cross member in front of the fuel tank and the bigger one right up under the rear seats will almost certainly be suffering, as well as the extreme front end of the chassis (remove the rubber bungs covering the jacking points for access). A lot of the sections rot from the inside out. The beauty of a Defender - I have the earlier 110 (basically the same) is that you can get under them without having to jack them up.

I'm not sure that Shultz is the best stuff for protection of the internal bits - I prefer waxoyl sprayed in via a Shultz gun and long extension tube and nozzle.

          Thanks guys

There was already so much waxoyl inside the chassis box sections it set on fire whilst he was welding! That said it hadn't protected the rear crossmember that well - but then it was quite well gone when I applied the waxoyl.

Come better weather and time I'm going to do it all again with Dinax S50. That's like waxoyl but it does get washed off eventually. That's why I like the sound of this shutz stuff that can go on first and gives some hard protection. However fighting rust in a Defender is always a losing battle - bit like a Stag!

Look into 3M products as they are a lot better quality - they do a 2 pack stone-chip that is really good stuff and can be painted over as well.

Quite right. the only way is to use proper air fed welding masks.... not something you are likely to have at home and neither will most of your local garages!

Guys - can I clarify this "Schutz" stuff. It seems to be a generic product not a branded product. I can even find Hammerite Schutz on eBay - but not on Hammerite's own website.

If there are multiple makes which would be the best to use as a stonechip?

My current intention is to clean everything up, treat any rust with Kurust," spray on "Schutz" stonechip and then perhaps put on standard underseal.

                Is this a good plan?

I've also got some cold galvanising paint but would that be too much?

                Chris.

Schutz is a brand, but a bit like Hoover its name has become the standard term. You need to remove all loose rust, then treat with something like kurust or even better Bilt Hamber's hydrate 80. But i would put some kind of paint on before coating with any kind of underseal schutz or otherwise. Hammerite smoothrite or similar at least, or a brushable epoxy. Cold galvanising or zinc rich primer doesn't work very well on pre corroded steel in my experience.

The guy who did my cross member said the Schutz he used was like a stonechip paint rather than an underseal. That would then be like the smoothrite - wouldn't it?

But I can't seem to find any. I'll keep looking though.

When I say I can't find any - I mean I can only find the Hammerite stone chip described as Schutz.

Schutz do a rubber like underseal and an anti stone chip that is overpaintable IIRC, I suspect he means the anti stone chip. Pretty much any anti stone chip will do the job. The textured ones are applied using a gun often termed a schutz gun but you can get aerosols too.

Personally I only use anti stonechip on panels that will be overpainted, like the front undervalence , every where else I want to see the rust before it has rotted out the panel behind the coating.
