Taxing the Stag in Advance

I guess many will seek to do what I wanted to do, tax the Stag for Summer use in advance, i.e. pay during March for tax running from 1st April. It seems to make sense for me.

This wasn't possible for me to do this using the otherwise excellent DVLA online facility as it kept reverting to a commencement date of MARCH 2014 and did not give me the choice of a deferred APRIL commencement. We used to be able to do this when past the 15th of the preceeding month, but I could not do that this time for whatever reason and I don't want to throw a month away. (Actually, with a June 1st 1974 reg car it will be the last time I will have to pay I hope!)

I didn't want to trawl down the Post Office (Customer No 5 please.....) so after the unpteenth attempt I dug a little more and found a phone number 0300 123 4321. After going through a little automated modernism (thankfully with no awful music) and deliberately messing up the information requested I got put through to a person, then managed to tax the car commecing APRIL 2014 for 6 months and still slightly in advance. This will probably work for anyone wanting to tax a car during April to commence on 1st May too.

Yes I tried to do the same online Steve. I made the trip to the post office only to be told that because it is on sorn I cant tax it until two days before the end of the month. So I will go back next Monday the 31st to get my tax disc as I am not in work that day. Looking forward to going for a nice drive after five months of sorndom! Going to buy 12 months and drive for 7 months before cashing the disc in at the end of October.

tried the same thing myself,my car has been on sorn since november. DVLA website kept only letting me tax it from March even after putting in reference number off of
V5 (log book). Have since found out you can only apply for tax 2 days in advance if taxing online once been on sorn

Yes, this is a bit of an issue.

If only we'd let them keep the coal-mines, dvla might still be working.

In principle: if you receive a "penalty" notice after parking somewhere that parking is free for a set period (and you exceeded that period) then there is nothing in law that anyone can do to get any cash out of you, just ignore all correspondence; however, if you overstayed you welcome (or simply didn't pay) in a car park where a set fee is charged, such as in a pay & display car park, then the owner or their agent can make a claim against you, the big question is how much they can claim as a penalty, as that is a moveable feast.

I heard something about 2 days before during the human-speak, but it came to nothing. My car was also on a Sorn but the point is that I taxed it on the 27th April although using a commencement of 1 April, so the 2 day rule may not stand unless there is some weekend effect? The phone number may be a useful way to deal with this.
