    Seat runner

I have commenced refurbing my Stag seats. I am having difficulty releasing the seat runner from the seat frame. I have removed the roll pins but this has not allowed runner to be released. Am I missing the obvious?? Any advice welcome apart from the RTFM comment I received on my last (which was also my first) post. I am a newbie and have embarked on a refurbishment of a 74 Auto. I have been hard at it for the past 7 weeks doing mechanical necessities along with the obligatory elbow grease with wire brush in hand. Hoping to get a respray done in the winter along with a full interior refurb. The colour of the car at the moment is a metallic green but it's original colour was maple. I am avoiding that choice cometh the respray!! lol..... I will post pictures of the progress as I fathom out how to actually post pictures on here

    Hi Steve,

A slightly belated welcome to the forum

l dismantled my seat runners however I didn't take any pictures and, unfortunately, don't recollect quite how I did it However, I did get mine to pieces and they did work again afterwards, so it can be done

I do recollect knocking out the roll pins - aren't there two per seat ? and then I seem to remember that it would only come apart by sliding the runners one way. At that stage the rollers fell out, before I saw exactly how they were fitted, and I had quite a job getting them back in properly Nevertheless, I don't recollect any undue difficulties in getting it all apart, nor any special techniques needed.

Sorry I can't be more help but maybe it's slightgly reassuring to know that it is possible. It does however make it much easier to paint all of the seat slides properly which can make a big difference to how good the interior of your car looks.

    Good luck.

    Cheers

    Julian

The seat runners are held to the seat with bolts and thrust washers along with the height adjustment mechanism which is held to the front of the seat frame with two bolts. Looking at the pictures in the manual those screws may be behind the trim. It also looks like the threaded adjuster screw has to be removed from its nut.
To try to help I have read the section in the manual to see if there are any roll pins that have to be removed and it doesn't describe that?

      Hope this helps!

I think, unless (quite likely) I have misread things, that Steve has got the runner assemblies off the seats and is trying to dismantle them. That's certainly what I was trying to refer to in my reply.

Getting the seats off the runner assembly is certainly much easier ! four shouldered bolts (keep an eye out for the washers and the height adjuster mechanism is best detatched by forcing off the sprag washer off the securing pin, behind the adjuster handle.

        Cheers

You read it correctly Julian. I am at the last stage in the destruction (!!) of the seat. Your comments are useful as you say it can be done. I will commence tomorrow with renewed optimism. Will keep you posted of my endeavours. Thanks...Steve

            Hi steve.
Welcome to the madhouse! I too am in the process of rebuilding a 74 auto. Not too much more to do now, just have to jack up the radiator cap and fit a new car under it, and i'm done!!!
Done my seats , but cant remember what i took off either. Good luck with the rebuild.

                That's usually my trick !

Steve, I vaguely remember only being able to get the rollers out (or was it back in ?) one at a time and having to slide the runners forward and backwards to do so.

Sorry to be so vague but, as I said, it's do-able.

                cheers

Any follow p on this, guys? Started refurbing my seats, have taken one of the pins out (4 off fitted), and taken the slider apart in a less than controlled manner! Only one roller and one ball bearing came out ( I think). Can anyone advise how many rollers and balls should be fitted

                    Thanks

                    Jonathan

                      Hi Jonathan,

Don't take this for certain, but I think there were about four rollers per slide. Ball bearings ? I can't, for the life of me, remember, I'm afraid.

I hope someone who can be a bit more helpful will come along soon

                      Cheers

                        Hi Johanathan

Four rollers and eight ball bearings per seat, just done mine. Not easy to re-assemble lots of swearing and bits of skin missing from fingers !,

                        Regards Paul.

Thanks Paul. Took the other slider apart yesterday and got two rollers and 4 balls out. Runners are ok on the roller tracks but badly indented in one or two areas at the ball tracks. Where yours like this and do they now slide smoothly? Did you assemble clean and dry or did you lubricate with anything? Think I favour dry as lubricant just seems to gunge up over time and stop the balls and rollers moving freely. Thoughts?

                          Jonathan

                            Hi Jonathan,

mine sound like the same as yours roller tracks smooth but ball tracks slightly marked/indeted, I cleaned mine and re-assembled with fresh grease, I thaught about dry silicone sray but did not have any to hand so went with fresh grease but used sparingly, did not like the thaught of metal to metal with no lubrication, all run smoothly now. Seats not in car yet waiting for trimmer to finish cover/foam assembly and then have to wait for car (at Faversham Classics) for welding.

                            Regards Paul.

Hi Paul, any idea the diameter of the rollers? Mine are 1/2" but this gives only a few though clearance on the trough. Actually there is no clearance on one side of trough but is on the other so the runner sits at an angle to the roller and not parallel. Not sure if what I have is original or just what someone has fitted in a previous repair!!
