    Oil pressure too high ?

I just finished an engine rebuild on my 73 TV8 - New pistons, rings, rebore, valve guides, big ends, little ends, mains bearings, regrind etc. I also took out a county oil pump and fitted a recon kit to an original oil pump using a recon kit from Robsport. I didn't see a noticeable difference in the oil pump spring length between the old county one and the new one in the robsport kit. The chains and tensioners have also been replaced within the last 1500 miles.
I thought that high oil pressure was good, but now having read a few posts here and elsewhere I am a little concerned that it could be too high.
I am still running on Millers running in oil. When first started from cold, at idle it runs at about 60-65Psi. When on a run and fully warmed up, at 2000rpm it is about 60psi and at idle it is about 50psi. I haven't revved it much above this so don't yet know if it goes even higher.
Should I be concerned about this ? If so, what can I do about it, and what pressures should I be aiming for ?

I would of thought it was a tad high and there is potential to damage the chains tensioners and slippers s there not if undue pressure is heaped upon them ,it is possible to fine tune the spring to get the desired effect on the prv. I run 45?50 cold 25 hot tickover and climbing then on acceleration to about 40 at 4000rpm ish hot

Thanks for that. How do you fine tune the spring ?

Chuck it in the bin and fit an original one.....

Seriously, it is possible to increase the pressure by packing the spring with a washer. To decrease the pressure I think the only way is to cut off a coil or two from the spring. A case of trial and error until you achieve the desired effect. The 'normal' pressure range for a TV8 engine is, as posted by Stagmuffin.

I wonder if the Robsport rebuild kit comes with a county spring?

As DJT says the only way to lower the pressure is to shorten the spring a little, Tony Hart recommended 45psi hot to me

All this assumes that the gauge is accurate, and not reading high across the range? I'd be tempted to try another gauge before committing to more work.

              Regards

I put a new (County) pump in my rebuild with the original spring. Oil pressure read an indicated 50 psi hot running. I popped the new spring in that had come with the pump and the pressure rose to 65 psi. As Steve says there's no guarantee of the accuracy but the difference is probably a good indication.

                  Nick,
Does your engine read 50 psi doesn`t matter whether cold/warm/hot?

While everything except the real innards were taken apart last summer, I noticed there was a new county pump put in by the PO. I don`t have the old pump. I only had an oil light beforehand, but while putting everything back together, I added the combined oil/water tempo gauge. Now the pressure reads 50 psi all the time the engine is running.

The tappets/buckets under the cam covers now sound noisier than they did before had the timing cover off and changed the oil. Not sure if its related.

I'm coming to the conclusion (with some help from better minds than mine) this is also a job I need to do.
