Help. Starter Solenoid Spade snapped off.

I hope someone can help. Just completed a refit of water pump oil pump.. etc. Car didn't start. The connections to the starter were loose. When trying to "tighten" things up the spade on the low voltage white wire sheered off at the starter motor solenoid. Can I solder directly onto the copper "stump" or do I need to take the solenoid out and repalce the spade. Or are there other options. Thanks again Mike

ps the suns out, so should the car be, but it isn't.

Hi you should be able to solder directly to the stump, I'd make up a short lead with a spade on one end and solder the other to the stump. Hard part will be cleaning the area to solder, try some brake cleaner if you have it, or cellulose thinners / methanol. White spirit isn't any good. Then Dremel with a wire brush. Needs to be very clean and bright

    Good luck

      Hi Mike,

Had the same problem but had the luck to have a solenoid from another starter to replace it.
Soldering could be difficult when the solenoid is still mounted on the starter under the car. But it is possible to take the solenoid out without removing the starter, although not easy.
If what's left from the spade is long enough you could solder it. But it has to be cleaned thoroughly because any oil or grease left will influence the quality of the soldering.
And I would also, as suggested earlier, solder a short wire with a spade fitted. Then, with the help of a cable tie, fixate the small wire to the solenoid so there is no strain on the soldering.
The small spade is rivited to the solenoid (see picture). So to dremel out the rivit and replace it with a new spade is another possibility.
      Lots of succes.

Thanks to Peter and Grumpy. I was just worried about soldering to the stump and damaging any insulation in the solenoid. Mike
