Realistically I would love to see Stags up around this value..
In my mind compared to TR6's and even the GT6 the Stag is too cheap..

The advert has a make offer button, I may put a cheeky offer in for less than he paid for it.

I'd say that was easily the right sort of money for a Stag in that condition from a dealer. Compare Triumphstagshop or Cherished Classics. Nothing from stopping a private buyer bidding higher at the auction and still getting a bargain. That's business I guess.

Not as much as a steal as you may think.

If the car sold at auction £8600 then plus buyers premium 8-10% ? lets say another £860 makes it about £9400.
Then the dealer has to cover the potential buyer bringing in a part ex 1958 Fiat Gogomobile at £3500 worth at the death £2000 which the owner thinks is worth the world that's likely another £1500 gone to sell the car on making it stand at about £10900.
Plus the dealer will have to offer at least a 3 month warranty which may cost about another £300 now the cars at £11200
Then if when checking the car over the potential buyer notices an off colour panel or an oil pressure that's not what he likes, into the workshop/bodyshop and another £200 is ratcheted onto the cost making the car £11400.
If the car stands for a couple of months the finance rate may cost the dealer about 1% over base rate per month on the capital employed which means another £200 on the cost making £11600 total.
Now that the cars stood around a while the MOT has nearly run out and the purchaser expects a new MOT, when put in for a check the steering rack is showing excessive wear and needs changing at £120 exchange and 4 hours labour (off the Triumph labour rates) at £20 per hour internal rate another £200 total goes kkeeeerrrchinge onto the cost making the car stand at £11800 cost.
So the dealer finds his naïve buyer who accepts the asking price of £14995 without haggling and writes up a profit on the deal of £3100. Out of which the costs for the salesman salary if employed are taken, a portion for the rates, lighting, heating, and other ancillary costs linked with a business are creamed off and if the dealer is lucky he'll make a £1500 profit out of it.
Admittedly I've noted and applied costs which all of which may not apply if the car is a belter, but likewise I've not accounted for a lemon with a hidden nightmare of a previous owners bodge which although acceptable to him cannot in consciousness be passed on to an unsuspecting retail purchaser.

If we want to use these dealers and their expertise in finding and marketing our cars we have to allow them to make a profit, if we are happy to Robo shop everywhere (Research offline, buy online) then the end result will be as we are starting to see now on our highstreets. Only the charity shops can turn a profit, using merchandise given to them by relatives of the deceased, excess clothing from retail shops giving last years fashion clothing away to clear space and marketing it through volunteer workers helping whichever hospice or organisation has opened it.

We all had a chance to buy this car at the same price from the same auction, I don't begrudge the dealer his bit of luck in buying it at this price.

Careful, if he accepts you are bound by ebay rules to buy it i believe.

The £8662.50 was with the buyers premium, When I was working in a garage we used to by Granada's for £1,500 under trade money put them up for under retail and the garage use to make a fortune and they use to fly away the same with Rover P63500S, never seen a poor car trader, or heard of one that pays as much tax as the poor old folk like ME on PAYE.

If that price included buyers premium then it will help the dealer. As you say when Granada's and Rover P6 were being retailed the market was different, that was a few years ago, dealers would dream of those profits now.
Average profit on lots of new cars are nearer £200 these days, and as for poor car traders yes I know a few and not the sort that moan about money in the golf club. I know the sort that have had to resort to driving delivery vehicles for a living scratching to make ends meet, but don't get me wrong I'm not saying that dealers don't make profits, I'm saying they should. But the glory days of the motor trade has gone and now they have a tough act to make, just saying.

I've been a self employed for 30 years, since my last 'Job' ended. As with most things in life, there are advantages and disadvantages, and I doubt these are clear when looking from the outside in.

Looking from the inside out, the world seems to be full of people with jobs, pensions, potential unemployment benefits and probably healthcare plans thrown in. They readily understand that their salaries are produced by their employer making a gross profit. Pity they don't apply that logic elsewhere - No gross profit, no wages, but that doesn't stop them begrudging someone who dares to make their living in a slightly different way.

Even a sweetshop operates on 100% markup - it's not often a motor trader manages that, although his stock outlay can be similar. If he does manage that, good luck to him, but if he's wise he'll keep 10% of the gross profit back for self insurance against the claims made by people who use a brand new car as a standard, when they actually bought a very used car at a fraction of its original price.

                            Regards

                            Steve

I read lots of thread on here about daft ebay prices and such. In the end something is worth what somebody pays for it. The members on this Forum can sometimes sound a bit superior with these threads. If you think the Ebay ad is rubbish or the goods useless-don't buy them.
