RIP Unipart 'Super Plus 3' coolant ?

I last flushed any refilled our Stag just over 3 years ago with the luminous green Unipart 'Super Plus 3' coolant but I'm now really struggling to locate a source and have been told that it's possibly been discontinued. Can anybody here confirm this ?

If so, I'm wanting to replace with a similar Ethylene Glycol based coolant (rather than OAT) and have had Comma XStream G48 suggested as an alternative - is anybody here using G48 with good results ? I really liked the luminous colour of the Unipart as I found it ideal for tracing any leaks - does the G48 also meet this brief ? Any other recommendations ?

Also, I've always used the Holts 2-part flush and neutraliser - whilst this seems to still be available, I guess it's worth asking whether there's any better product available these days.

    Many thanks

I've been using the coolblue Unipart 2 year stuff since I can't get the green version any more.

Can you mix them? I'm also running with the bright green stuff but have now run out so will presumably have to get the blue one for future top -ups. I'm not keen on doing a complete flush and refill unless I have to, only did that last year.

      Cheers,

Don't know as I flushed the old out; heater pipes off / thermostat out etc just to be sure.

I think I can help out on this one as I used to use the luminous green Unipart antifreeze but struggled to find it a couple of years ago.

I contacted Unipart directly and this is the email correspondence that ensued:

          Cheers

          Julian

I have always used Unipart Antifreeze and it has been green/yellow in colour. However the most recent that I have purchased has been blue. Therefore I have a few queries:

          1. Is this compatible with the original type ?
          2. It is not OAT type is it ?
          3. What is the difference ?

Advice from our technical team is as follows: -

"In true terms you should never mix antifreeze.

The Blue has a 2 year life whilst the Green had I believe had 4 year life. By putting the Blue into the Green you down grade the service period from 4-2 years.

A colour change may occur when mixing which can later cause you to incorrectly identifiy what Antifreeze you actually have in your vehicle.

You cannot mix standard antifreeze with the OATS product which is an Organic Antifreeze and has a 5 years service life and a higher addtive package.

The Blue is for the older vehicle whilst the OATS is for more modern vehicles."

I wonder if you could just help me with a couple of follow on questions, please.

          · Bearing in mind that your Blue antifreeze has a shorter life, is the green still available anywhere ?
          · Can I just confirm my understanding that your green and blue antifreezes are not OAT technology ?

The green antifreeze is now discontinued. However, there is still some stock around our branch network, as follows: -

UGCGEC1001B (1 litre) @ Bradford, Penryn, Peterborough, Salford, Southampton, Stoke.
          UGCGEC1005B (5 Litre) @ Stoke.

Further comment from our technical team, as follows: -

"Both the Blue and Green products were standard Monoethylene Glycol products and should not be mixed with silicate free OAT coolants."

there is an alternative which is evans classic coolant which is a waterless coolant, initially expensive to buy, once its in its for life.£180.00 FILLS UP A STAG approx but as there is no water there is no internal pressure and no corrosion of waterways/heads etc I was advised it may make engine run slightly hotter but this has not occurred and as its waterless it also stops internal hotspots causing pinking.it can be found on the net and fleabay,I read up about it first on the internet by just typing evans classic coolant.it makes really interesting reading

Thanks folks, especially Julian for your most comprehensive response !

I've been researching Comma XStream Green and their website confirms "Ethylene Glycol based antifreeze and coolant with silicate based inhibitors"

Whilst their compatibility it doesn't list the Triumph Stag (or any cars not existing beyond 1980) it does confirm suitability for 1979 Saab 900 whose engine is a close cousin the Triumph slant 4 (& therefore V8)

Also, it contains BASF Glysantin G48 which gets long term thumbs up here http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...ight=glysantin

Not the cheapest at £20 for 5 litres but it is green (!), can last 3 years and has the bonus of a bitter taste added - an important consideration with our 2 cats :-)

                Hi Paul,

I am a big fan of Millers products and although I haven't used their anti freeze, it may well be worth considering.

Unlike many manufacturers, they do specialize in classic cars and, as I've said before, their MD runs a Stag so they should produce something suitable. I've always found their technical enquiry section really helpful so it could well be worth asking them for their advice.

                Cheers

                Julian

Ps If you do contact them then do let us know what they say.

                  I emailed Comma Oils and the asked them the question ;

"I'm enquiring regarding the suitability (or otherwise) of your Comma XStream G48 coolant for my 1974 Triumph Stag (2997cc) - please could you advise me"

                  And have received the following confirmation back ;

"Comma Xstream G48 would be suitable for this car, as it is based on silicate additive technology and this is similar to what was around at the time the car was new."
