    Knocking noise from water pump

    Hi

I've just been fiddling with my Stag following some advice with my carbs, when I noticed a knocking noise coming from the water pump area when the engine is idling. Would anyone know if this is likely to be the water pump bearings? The noise seems to go when the engine is revved up. Should I be worried?? Sorry to be asking so many questions on here but I'm still relatively new to Stag ownership!! Thanks! (again)

    Hi Brian

    Couple of questions.

Has the pump ever been rebuilt if so how many miles ago?

Has the engine ever been rebuilt?

If neither have ever been rebuilt you may need to rebuild your pump, I personally would take it apart as Alan will tell you if it goes it's an engine out job!

If you take the pump out , remember the bolt on the top is left hand thread.

        Hi

Thanks for the replies and the reminder about the thread! Stuart - The engine has done about 27,000 miles since rebuilt in 1988. I have a receipt from Rimmers for a new water pump which was fitted at the time of the rebuld in 1988, so it has also done 27,000 miles. The noise does not sound like bearings somehow, more of a knock. Could it be a worn gear do you think?

        Many thanks

Brian, I sincerely hope your are not in the early stages of the problem I recently had. Read this and decide for yourself.

If your waterpump gear is jumping you need to stop driving it immediately and save the jackshaft.

Hope there is a much less serious answer to your problem. - Alan

Many thanks Alan - I hope I don't have that problem. I'm going to strip the pump out and have a look if anything is wrong, hope the jackshaft is OK. Hope yours is sorted and well again now!

            Thanks

Well, I have it stripped down to the water pump, but I can't get it out!! Is there a way of removing the pump without the special tool? The bolt unscrewed and left the pump in. Many thanks.

Put the bolt part wayback in and with a couple of large screwdrivers try levering upwards under the bolt, or try gripping the bolt with grips and pull upwards. knackers the bolt but sometimes does the trick.

I know its out now but when I had same problem, levers didn't work butI made a tool within 5 mins. A small piece of angle iron drilled in centre to take pump bolt, a couple of smaller holes each end with longer bolts and nuts. Tighten angle iron onto pump with pump bolt and wind end bolts down against block to pushpump out.

Thanks for the help and advice everyone. The pump is back in and I've just had the car running for 30 mins in the garage and it is Ok so far!I think I mangled one thread when I put the manifold back on thoughIf it has to come off agan I'll definately be drilling bigger holes in it. The fact that somebody previously had been hitting it on the long bolt holes did not help- it is one of theses I mangled, though it tightened Ok. There is still a slight noise from the pump but not the heavy knocking which was there. I suspect that my alternator bearings are adding to it a little!!

                        Hi Brain

If the thread you have managled is 5/16 UNC I have just bought a kit with 10 inserts but will only be using 6 of them so could pop over one day and fix it?

I routinely replace all my inlets with 5/16" unc. I looked at the amount of bolt thread proud of the inlet manifold and actuallygoing into the head - with gasket it was less than 6mm, no wonder they strip! Since then have always used longer bolts.

Someone else suggested using metric inserts as easier to get hold of bolts.

When im helicoiling with the same insert as the original thread I never drill the hole out.I have a hoover handy and take my time with the tap keep backing off after a few turns, taking the swarf(Is that how you spell it?)out.

                              Hi Stuart

Many thanks for the kind offer. The thread is a 5/16" UNC which I mangled. However, it did tighten up OK so I continued putting it all back together and fingers crossed all seems well, so i am a little reluctant to disturb it all again until something goes wrong!! If I do need to take the manifold off again sometime, maybe I could give you a shout? I think I'll try driving it for a while and see what happens first!

                              Thanks again
