    ZF gearbox article

4 page Article in this week's Classic Car Buyer describing driving a ZF converted Stag, somewhat drawn out over 4 pages but very fair and accurate description of the effect of the conversion.

Why read about it when we have the real thing - eh John?

True but there are many who don't believe it's so good. One of the few mods that does not have negative side effects.

Now you're talking - corny in their day, but now as much of a classic as our cars...

Dontcha know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express....

I'm seriously considering it, but it's a fair old wad of cash.

                Think I'll read the article.

It is is possible to do your own for a lot cheaper needs a bit of hard work if laying on your back on the garage floor like I did , we'll worth the effort

                  cheers Glenn

Think i will grab a copy of that as it sounds like a good conversion

Faversham Classics offer it but i think it is around the £2k mark fitted !!

                    I take it that its this magazine/paper - http://www.classic-car-buyer.co.uk/

Nearer to £3k now. The kit is available from Monarch Stags for £2600 http://www.monarch-stags.co.uk/transmission then there is fitting on top. The kit is, however, a very well engineered item. You get a reconditioned 'box, bespoke bellhousing, modified output casing with speedo drive to connect to your existing speedo, crossmember, etc. etc.

Ouch that is lumpy when you consider how much it is to recon a BW 35 or BW65

I put the ZF into my Stag and it was the best improvement I made to the car in 5yrs and over £14k spent post purchase. If you put it into perspective, to put a ZF or a 5sp 'box into a LWB E-Type will cost the thick end of £6k with the labour, I don't think the Stag cost is too bad. I'm currently having an S type Gearbox & OD refurbished for my car, I expect it will cost around the same as Faversham's are after once I have it fitted.

It's my car that was used in the article (which I have yet to actually see, despite the publishers promising me at least a couple of copies!). I had the conversion done following a drive in Kryten's car so I could see the difference for myself. I have to agree with Iani's comment above and consider it to be a massive improvement on the BW35 which in my case was getting very grumbly anyway. Yes, it's far from cheap but it gives me addtional peace of mind that the engine isn't working itself to destruction at only moderate motorway speeds. I'm looking forward to seeing the old girl in print!
