Engine Knock - I will find out what it is!

Well I'm back from the MoT this morning and have decided that I will sort out the knocking noise my Stag makes from cold. The knock has got worse so time to sort it. Here are some videos I took this morning to try to record the sound. The engine start is from cold (not started for 5 days). Final video was at the end of the run back from the MoT with a warm (not hot) engine, by which time the knock has almost gone, goes totally when hot.

Cold start - ignore Stag click!! and the cockerel

After driving out of garage - noise all around

Drive up the road - still cold

End of drive back from MoT - engine warm - not hot - knocking almost gone

    Will post more later!

First port of call i would do , is remove the airbox , to get access to the rocker covers , remove rocker covers and see if the timing chains are ok,

      Hi Roger

      This a common knock..
Usually turns out to be a worn bucket or loose or worn valve guide..
      Others will add to this

Does a worn bucket go quiet when the engine is hot??

No it does not.But a loose valve guide does,I have had the same problem especially after a period of layup.

It depends. It can go quieter after the oil has circulated and warmed up a bit..

                Hi Denise,

Maybe they've censored it because it was too loud

I've heard it on my computer and it IS loud - too loud for a valve guide or bucket I would have thought - although I guess the location of the microphone can make a big difference.

                Cheers

Mine made a similar noise and it turned out to be a worn valve guide in the left bank.

Think I out to start up a book - if I get the odds right I might make enough to cover cost of putting it right!!

I'm sure it's not a bucket as I've used my listen stick along side every valve and its silent. Valve guide on the other hand is a bit deeper in the engine. As the knocking noise seems to be a half engine speed it "fits".

I am thinking loose valve guides, that sound is still fresh in my mind as it was only a couple of months ago that I had three valve guides replaced, sounded the same .....
