Hi,
I've tired by several means to stop different noises and vibration issues over the last years. Propshaft UJ's, Quilt shaft bearing, half shafts and wheel bearings have been replaced and improoved the situation dramtically. Wheels have been balanced and the track has been set to the best we could get out.
I did stay with the old diff. We did not chage it then because I thought the available options were too expensive. It whines, specially under load as from 30 MPH, and creates a vibration when I come off the throttle on a downhill road. Me and my mecanic came to the conclusion that the diff pinion is causing these annoyances.
By reading older threads and by browsing the internet I got to the following options:
- rebuilding of the Stag diff according to http://www.donkennedy.co.uk/Diff/Diff.htm and eventually replacing the crown wheel and the pinion -> not the easiest job and unknown quality of CW/P
- replacement by a refurbished Stag/Saloon/Estate diff -> still unknown quality of CW/P and the refurbishment
- getting a Stag diff with EJ Wards uprated CWP -> Out of stock?
- Monarch BMW conversion -> could anybody comment on recent conversions (not the full rear end transplant)
- Weslake BMW conversion -> why is this one even more expensive?
Myself I am looking for a piece of mind solution and was initially trying to get a diff with uprated CW/P from Wards. Those seem to be out of stock although a new batch seems to be planned (timing unsure) according to them.
Is there any other way of keeping the old diff and have major whining treated? (a little bit of whine now and then is not an issue for me)
Next option would be the BMW conversion and as Monarch is considerably cheaper than Weslake I'd be going for one of those. Is this indeed a bolt off/on job as they say on their website. I can hire my mecanics friend for helping me out doing the conversion but he has no experience with classic british cars. As we are planning to do the job in my garage (I have a pit) we can't use the toolset of a professional workinh place. Any special tools to foresee or adaptors to be built? Or to put it in other words : Is the Monarch BMW diff conversion (not the full rear-end transplant, just the diff) as easy as a replacement with a Stag diff would be? What about the arms? Good fit too? Any comments would be much appreciated as I could not find any recent testamonial in the forum.
Cheers,
Alex
