    differentials - options and opinions

    Hi,

I've tired by several means to stop different noises and vibration issues over the last years. Propshaft UJ's, Quilt shaft bearing, half shafts and wheel bearings have been replaced and improoved the situation dramtically. Wheels have been balanced and the track has been set to the best we could get out.

I did stay with the old diff. We did not chage it then because I thought the available options were too expensive. It whines, specially under load as from 30 MPH, and creates a vibration when I come off the throttle on a downhill road. Me and my mecanic came to the conclusion that the diff pinion is causing these annoyances.

By reading older threads and by browsing the internet I got to the following options:

    - rebuilding of the Stag diff according to http://www.donkennedy.co.uk/Diff/Diff.htm and eventually replacing the crown wheel and the pinion -> not the easiest job and unknown quality of CW/P
    - replacement by a refurbished Stag/Saloon/Estate diff -> still unknown quality of CW/P and the refurbishment
    - getting a Stag diff with EJ Wards uprated CWP -> Out of stock?
    - Monarch BMW conversion -> could anybody comment on recent conversions (not the full rear end transplant)
    - Weslake BMW conversion -> why is this one even more expensive?

Myself I am looking for a piece of mind solution and was initially trying to get a diff with uprated CW/P from Wards. Those seem to be out of stock although a new batch seems to be planned (timing unsure) according to them.

Is there any other way of keeping the old diff and have major whining treated? (a little bit of whine now and then is not an issue for me)

Next option would be the BMW conversion and as Monarch is considerably cheaper than Weslake I'd be going for one of those. Is this indeed a bolt off/on job as they say on their website. I can hire my mecanics friend for helping me out doing the conversion but he has no experience with classic british cars. As we are planning to do the job in my garage (I have a pit) we can't use the toolset of a professional workinh place. Any special tools to foresee or adaptors to be built? Or to put it in other words : Is the Monarch BMW diff conversion (not the full rear-end transplant, just the diff) as easy as a replacement with a Stag diff would be? What about the arms? Good fit too? Any comments would be much appreciated as I could not find any recent testamonial in the forum.

    Cheers,

    Alex

It depends on the skill of the mechanic. A rebuild of the original diff is relatively easy (get the stag workshop manual). Whining is usually the crown wheel and pinion, but change the bearings and seals as well to do a proper job. I put in a new set (rimmer bros I think) and the whining went completely. Worth taking your time to measure all clearances, run out etc according to the manual, to make sure you get it right.

As I understand it the Monarch diff requires that you extend one of the exhaust pipes to give clearance, it's not quite as straightforward as it seems from the site.

        Thanks!
I'll then rather go the conservative way and try to fix the existing diff.
Could anybody recommend a special supplier of CWP, bearings etc or should i look at the usual suspects?
        kind regards,
        Alex

Don't know about suppliers, but the screeching whine from my Midget's diff was cured by installing new bearings.

            Hi,

I finally went for the Monarch Option and fitted a new BW diff, new drive shaft, wheel bearings, new propshaft and replaced most of the rubbers.
It is indeed not a job a beginner is able to do himeself (I had some very valuable hep from my neighbor who works as a mecanic)

Butr what a difference it makes to te car!

Not only the whine and the twich are gone, a lot of clonks, vibrations and the droning went away too.

The handling feels far more "modern" and safe too.

I finally dare to rev the engine up to 5500rpm without getting shaked all over and it's marvelous without all those noises.

I can definitively recommend these mods althoug it leaves a considerable hole in your wallet.

On the other hand has changed the car soooo nicely that I don't regret the efforts.

            greetings,

            Alex

You also have a wide range of diff ratios now at under £200 for a bomb proof diff.

I went for the 1 : 3.64 ratio as this was closest to the original. But indeed I can easiely switch to a different ratio. Another advantage : - no more diff nose (quilt shaft + bearing) that can brake (it previously did)

you can get a 1:3.73 which is closer to the original. I'm also on a 3:64 at the moment but have a 3.46 waiting to be fitted.

? how do you match the gearbox speedo drive ratio?
                      Just approximate?

As my spedo whobbles a bit I don't care about my 1.62% of inaccuracy but as far as I know it needs to be adjusted on the gauge itself - maybe someone else can explain what to do exactly

With the 3.64 mine is bang on with a sat nav speed. I'll just use the sat nav to get used to the under reading when the 3.46 is on.

With the BMW diff in Triumph subframe.... have you had any issues with the halfshafts pulling out the diff?
