camera mount and microphone

I am trying to sort a mount for my digital SLR camera to make some video footage. I have some OK video but too much wind noise.
I have seen and heard much better and was wondering if anyone wants to divulge their secrets.
Microphone and wind barrier?

My camera has a socket for a remote mic. So I have one of them but it needs a wind sock I think even if its behind the front seat out of the direct wind with the roof down.

Don't you have to have one of those big furry things over the mic to stop wind noise?

I have made posts on this Forum before of the arrangement I have on my Stag for camcorder recording with sound, but can't remember the post title, will have to do a search. I still have a microphone permanently attached inside the rear bumper just above the exhaust to catch better the Stag "burble" with the cable fed through the car and outputting under the speaker grill in the centre of the dashboard where I have a bracket with screw that fits into the tripod socket of my old camcorder for when I want to take some video on one of my outings. If I find my old post which contains a drawing of the setup I will put a Link to it on here.

I've been experimenting over the last year or so. Have a Sony AS15 with Skytronic stereo lapel mike available on Amazon which I now mount inside a large piece of foam and press it inside the bumper just above the exhaust. Cuts out a lot of wind noise but not all but still sounds pretty good.

When I first got my Stag i posted these two videos to YouTube. The first one had a mono tie clip mic (Sony) clipped to the rear bumper. i think the exhaust distorted the mic but it sounds much better without the wind noise.
the second vid was using a stereo mic iin the same place. this coped with the sound without distorting so sounded better. Up to 50 mph it was fine but road noise takes over and is as bad as the wind noise. The camera in the pictures looks a bit agricultural now but as long as the camera has a separate Mic socket it would work in the same way.

So this is my first effort. Not much input from me actually. I just made the mount pushed the buttons and drove the car and did the upload. The camera did the rest.

I have a mic so I will try to get a wind break for it and do another video at some time. Id like to have it sorted for National weekend as it would be good to video a hill climb run!

Unfortunately I can't find the drawing of my camcorder/mike setup, but the setup is as I said in my earlier post, and the sound it gives you you can see/hear for your yourself by watching this old YouTube video clip I made a number of years ago when I first attached the mike and camcorder. It was taken around the area where I live. It is just a cheap Mike attached to the phono mike input socket on the camcorder (an old Sony Handycam).

I've friends who go out cycling and make some HD recordings using 'helmet cameras' with commentary from external tie-clip microphones and the image quality and stability plus lack of wind noise is remarkable !

I've always thought that their lightweight and compact size should make positioning on the Stag a doddle. These small camera records on SD cards making transfer to laptop for editing very easy.

IIRC the camera and mike setup cost well under £100, readily available on Amazon plus various other sites who do pay their taxes

I used one of them once on a green laning trip. It was OK and good value for money.... But I now have a four hundred quid camera that can do this if I help it and that way I dont have to explain to SWMBO why I have to spend more money on camera stuff!

By the way Aldi have a small "action video camera" at good price......
