my new toy but no idea what it telling me ?

Have my new toy : " infrared temperature reader ", looks cool and does what is says on tin but no idea if figures are meaning anything ?

after good run : top hose is 74c
thermostat housing is 75c
bottom hose is 56c
hose to water pump 74c
heater ret pipe hose 50c
cam covers 43c

My temperature gauge stays on 1/4 when being run and never appears to move above that, can anyone tell me if those figures are " the norm " ?

As I understand things the important thing is the difference between the top and bottom hoses. Your difference would suggest that the radiator is doing its job and the dash mounted temp gauge is telling the truth.
someone else will have to tell you if the temperatures are right.

I ran a series of tests in a previous post. Your measurements look good the waters not getting too hot and the dad's cooling it nicely. If anything they are possible a bit low so a hotter thermostat should be ok but better safe than sorry

I would hazard a guess that you have a cold thermostat fitted, 74 degrees seems a bit low but corresponds with the quarter gauge reading. On my cars an 82 degree thermostat gives about a needle width below half and an 88 about a needle width above half.

I suspect that, before worrying about the specific temperature readings, you try to get an idea of the calibration of the meter. Mine can give quite different readings depending on the surface being "read", the distance away from it, and the size of the object being measured.

Otherwise what you have found is consistent with the temperatures you would expect to find in those areas.
