Oil filter for 'Spin on' conversion

Just rec'd a couple of replacement filters from a 'Tier one' Stag supplier and am supprised to see there is no 'Non return' valve in the filters.

I always thought it was important to have the 'non return' valve to prevent the oil draining back out of the pump when the engine is stopped?

Anyone have the filter codes (on the boxes not the supplier code) of the spin on filters they are using?

    HI Alan,

I use GFE173 ( i think this one is widely used ) or GFE166, both are Unipart and have non-return valves

    cheers......Andy

I use GFE173 too. Get mine either from the local Unipart outlet or from ldpart.co.uk

Ok a more direct question - How important do you think it is to have a 'Non return' valve?

            Hi Alan,

As the Stag filter is the correct way up andnear the bottom of the engine, I would have thought the answer was 'not really'. Non return valves are there to stop oil draining out of the filter when the engine is stopped, this leading to zero oil pressure at start up. Some MGs come to mind where the oil filter is upside down and quite high.

In the case of our cars, where is the oil going to drain to?

As usual, always prepared to be corrected

Unlike the straight 6 and 4 cylinder cast iron engines the Stag engine does not require a non return valve as the filter is upright it can not fully drain back into the sump.

Agreed, it is less of a problem than on the 4 cylinder Triumph engines. It is a personal choicefor me-all the poor quality oil filters i'v had the pleasure of fittng in the past have not had a non-return valve, i now always use Unipartand ensure they have avalve

Not necessary when the filter hangs down and remains full....after all does the original replacement element filter have a non return valve?

The filter doesn't, but there is one in the bottom of the bowl that gets re-used.

I thought that was just a bypass valve in case the filter gets blocked?

BTW when I bought my first Stag 19 years ago, the crank was rumbling - I managed a small reduction (these were in the days when Stags were sold before the magazine came out).

Taking it apart I found the valve sitting in the bottom of the filter bowl with the spring above and thus filter floating and not doing much. Expensive mistake
